Where to find the secret ‘MASSIVE’ Kmart store catching shoppers by surprise
- Replies 7
Some people don't enjoy shopping, but the vast majority of us do. Shopping is a great way to find deals on items you need or want and also a great way to spend time with friends or family.
There are many different types of shopping, from grocery shopping to clothes shopping to window shopping, and there's something for everyone to enjoy. It can simply be an excuse to get out of the house, stretch our legs and socialise a little.
In the case of Australian shoppers, one Kmart branch is causing quite a stir — mostly because people had no clue it was there!
Kmart’s new-but-not-really-new flagship store in the city’s central business district, located at 236 Bourke Street, is a 3-storey, 5000 square-metre structure occupying what once was the Target store.
You may be wondering, why did this store receive such little fanfare?
Well, for starters, it opened amid COVID-19 lockdowns in 2021 when staying in was quite the (painful, but necessary) craze.
But now that shoppers are catching up and relishing in the discovery of such a large Kmart store in the CBD, they are also thrilled to find out that each of the three storeys has its own unique merchandise.
Thankfully, social media platform TikTok user Islah Palmer took the liberty of giving us a virtual tour of the store, and we must say, we understand the hype!
‘Three-storey Kmart!!! This is at the Melbourne CBD store at Bourke Street!!! I am obsessed!!!’ said in her video showing viewers around the store.
Palmer could not help but point out the neat layout and visuals of the store, and even said it had items that were out-of-stock in other stores.
At least based on her video, the store has various options for shoppers with sections for clothing, beauty, homeware, the outdoors, and even Halloween!
In the comments of Islah's video, hundreds of shoppers shared their amazement over the massive store.
‘Excuse me, 3-storey? Be right back, going to Melbourne,’ one user wrote.
Another added: ‘I live in Melbourne and didn’t even know there was a 3-storey Kmart.’
‘I’d be here for hours’, one user wrote, while another added that they hoped the store was open ‘24 hours’ just to shop there.
Meanwhile, other shoppers could not help but compare the Kmart store to other retailers.
One user noted that Kmart was ‘set up like Myer’, to which another added: ‘I’m in love with it.’
‘So much better than the Target that was there.’
In an effort to inspire shoppers and make the shopping experience more enjoyable and hassle-free, the Kmart store uses the latest innovations, including a new graphics suite.
'Kmart Melbourne CBD marked a brand-new concept for us, as our very first three-level store.' Kmart CEO John Gualtieri said.
'The store creates an elevated experience designed specifically for the city shopper, with additional space and split levels allowing us to experiment with design innovations including digital interactivity for a better customer experience,' he added.
The store also won Store Design of the Year 2022 at the Retail Asia Awards for its modern approach to retail shopping.
According to Kmart’s website, the store is open 8 AM - 9 PM on weekdays, and 9 AM - 9 PM on weekends.

Member @Gaena made a great point, saying ‘I can only dream of this kind of Kmart. Our regional store is just hopeless, hardly anything advertised online is available and since so much floor space was taken up when someone had the bright idea(?) of putting the checkouts in the middle of the store, nearly all the space usually taken up with Homewares and/or clothing was hugely reduced, sad really it is just not the same now. I can no longer say I will just pop into Kmart to pick up one of those and we do not have a Big W here to substitute for the loss.’
This is definitely something we are hearing a lot! Luckily this store has the self-checkouts by the entrance!
And if you’re in Melbourne and trying to find this store, @DavidC57 has the best advice! ‘It's located in Bourke St, just up from Swanston St intersection, near the tram stop! It's a well-lit store, with great bargains, and self-serve registers at the front near the entrance. I like to order online, then pop in and pick up from this store.’
What’s your reaction to this story? Are you considering a trip to this store, if you’re nearby?
And if not, what features do you wish your neighbourhood retailer would implement?
