The problem is, two of the overnight millionaires have yet to claim their prize.
If you bought a lotto ticket for New Year’s Eve, maybe you’re one of the lucky winners that lotto officials have been looking for. Twelve people won a division one prize in last Saturday’s $40 million Gold Lotto draw, each taking home $3,333,333, and wow, that’s a lot of money!
Four winners bought their tickets from Queensland, another four were from Victoria, three of the ticket holders were from NSW, and one was from Western Australia.
Out of the twelve new millionaires, however, two have yet to come forward to claim their winnings.
The two tickets were bought at Nextra Orion, Springfield, and Julia Creek News, Julia Creek.
One of the winners revealed how he and his wife found the whole situation ‘surreal’.
‘Normally, I don’t [really] check my ticket straight away, but on Saturday night, I thought I’d have a quick look. Then, I started scrolling and I could see all six numbers lit up,’ he told reporters.
He shared that when he and his wife checked the ticket together, they ‘didn’t get much sleep’ over New Year’s Eve.
‘We just couldn’t believe it.’
The man explained that his wife picked the winning numbers, and ‘have used those numbers ever since’.
The man said he planned to use his winnings to pay off his mortgage and help his children.
Lotto officials are encouraging those who purchased an entry into the draw to double-check their tickets.
The winning numbers for the Gold Lotto draw 4325 on December 31, 2022, were: 11, 23, 35, 42, 20, and 45. The supplementary numbers were 8 and 38.
But what are the chances of winning the lottery? In truth, the odds vary greatly among different countries. In Australia, the odds of winning a division one prize are around 1:708,400.
Those looking to increase their chances of winning should play ‘traditional’ lottery games (like the Saturday Gold Lotto!) for better odds.
Nevertheless, the lottery is (largely) a game of luck – don’t get discouraged if you don’t win! Otherwise, you run the risk of developing a gambling disorder.
