A daring escape ended in disaster in Montville, Queensland, when a robot vacuum cleaner went rogue and met an untimely end.

Footage captured the appliance hurtling down a driveway before venturing onto the road, oblivious to the danger ahead.

The result was both tragic and oddly comical—a robot vacuum flattened by a passing car.

The Dreame Tech vacuum, valued between $600 and $3000, had been a reliable helper at the guesthouse for more than a year.

One day, it decided to leave the safety of its mapped-out cleaning area and make a break for freedom.

Video shows the vacuum hastily navigating the driveway before colliding with a grey Subaru, ending its short-lived adventure.

Moments later, a resident approached the scene, lifting the now-lifeless appliance and carrying it back to safety.

The vacuum’s owner, Stuart McKenzie, who works as a 24/7 snake catcher, shared his grief on social media with a heartfelt tribute.

‘Being a 24/7 snake catcher means we don’t have a lot of spare time for general chores, so my wife and I got a Robo vacuum,’ he wrote.

‘Today our hard working Robo vacuum decided to leave its ‘Mapped Out Area’ and go for a wander out the front door of the house and onto the road and got hit by a car.’

‘Obviously, it was an accident that the person ran it over as it would have been hard to see in the shadows. (The driver) felt horrible but was also confused about why a Robo vacuum would be on the road.’

‘Either way, we are now confused why our Robo decided he wanted to leave? We always leave the door open when we are up there, and he has never done this …’

‘Did we work him too hard? Was he not happy with his working conditions? Did he develop a mind of his own?’

‘Hopefully Dreame Tech can explain to me why my robot vacuum decided to up and leave for the first time ever in 12 months.’

Why robot vacuums escape their boundaries

Mapping errors: Software glitches can cause robots to 'forget' their boundaries

Door detection fails: Open doors may not register as barriers in some conditions

Sensor confusion: Bright sunlight or shadows can interfere with navigation systems

Boundary marker issues: Virtual walls or magnetic strips may malfunction

Algorithm updates: Software changes can alter navigation behaviour unexpectedly

The footage quickly went viral, drawing more than 700,000 views and a flood of amused comments from viewers.

‘I shouldn’t laugh but my son had his RoboVac go rogue on him as well. He got an alert to advise him the vac was in trouble. He got home to find it had pushed a screen door open and was hanging over a three metre drop,’ one viewer wrote.

‘Rest in pieces,’ another commented.

‘It was gathering intel for the great robot uprising. That lady did us a favour by running it over,’ a third joked.

What This Means For You

The robot vacuum escaped its usual cleaning zone and ended up on a busy road, bringing an ordinary household appliance into extraordinary circumstances. Valued between $600 and $3000, it had been a reliable helper for 12 months before its unexpected adventure.

Owner Stuart McKenzie shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, mixing confusion and humour over the incident, while footage of the vacuum’s final moments went viral, sparking widespread amusement and anecdotes from viewers. For many of us, it’s a reminder that even the gadgets we trust most can surprise us, and that life—like a runaway vacuum—sometimes has its own plans.

My daughter and granddaughter just bought one of these vacuum's and was trying it out and my granddaughters looked like it was having a nervous breakdown as it was bumping into things all over the house. She pressed home and it wandered off like it had a mind of it's own.:ROFLMAO:
