When was the last time you cleaned your mattress? Here’s the best way to do it!

Spring has sprung and we all know what that means – it’s time to flip the entire house around and thoroughly rid it of dust, grime, and all other types of unwelcome dirt. But there may be one important spot in the bedroom that you’ve been glossing over during your spring cleaning sessions…
While most of us religiously change our bed sheets every so often, forgetting to clean the mattress is a common mistake.
Think about it this way – humans sweat, shed dead skin cells, sleep with their pets, and eat snacks in bed (don’t deny it). Over time, this builds up and makes your mattress a haven for bacteria, mould, and dust mites. Yikes!
So if you can’t recall when the last time you gave your mattress a good clean was, we’d hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s probably ranked among the dirtiest items in your home. Fortunately, Australia’s cleaning queen is here to save the day.

Cleaning a mattress may sound intimidating, but all that Chantel Mila requires to make your bed ‘smell like a dream’ and free from harmful bacteria are a vacuum, baking soda, essential oil, and linen spray.
The super mum starts by stripping the sheets off the bed first before grabbing a vacuum and running it directly over the mattress.
Then, she creates a mixture of baking soda and a few drops of essential oil, sprinkling it all over the mattress and leaving it to sit for several hours.
Don’t forget to wash your bedsheets too! Chantel reminded her followers to wash pillows and doonas every three to six months.
Before putting the sheets back on, vacuum the baking soda mixture away and finish it all off with your favourite linen spray.

‘This is life-changing!’ one user gushed.
‘I’m going to be trying that baking powder mixture. Thank you so much!’ said another.

According to SimplyMaid, cleaning your mattress reduces the risk of allergies, and itching. It also prevents certain illnesses by getting rid of harmful bacteria. In addition, it also improves your bedroom’s overall air quality.
‘A dirty mattress is one of the major contributing factors to polluted air inside a room. When you factor in how much sweat, dust, oil, and shed skin there are on your mattress, it’s easy to see why they can pollute the air around it.’ the website states.
‘It may also be hard to sleep at night when you’re constantly itching or blowing your nose. Dust mites and fungi can trigger allergies. Cleaning your mattress reduces the risk of allergies and prevents certain illnesses by getting rid of harmful bacteria.’
There you have it, everyone. Happy spring cleaning! Do you clean your mattress regularly? Are you in favour of Chantel’s cleaning hack or do you have your own preferred method? Let us know in the comments!
