In the first few months here after arriving from the UK my mother who had never enjoyed cooking and never bothered teaching me how, seriously I could not even boil water, she suffered a miscarriage and was bed ridden for a few weeks, dad was working full time so the job of preparing the evening meal fell to me after coming home from school, the first attempt was no too bad savoury mince and mash if I remember correctly and I had to ring my dad to ask him how to cook potatoes as I had no clue, I improved over time but it was not something I wanted to do every evening and I was eager for mum to recover so that she could take over. That hope was dashed when she went to work full time leaving me to continue cooking the nightly meal which I continued to do untill getting married and leaving home, I know that mum missed me when I left home but I think it had more to do with cooking duties reverting back to her!!

Mum didn’t teach me anything, just did all the cooking. So my first meal was the day I came home from my honeymoon. Fortunatel husband could cook so I got there eventually .
Me too. I cooked a huge pot of potatoes as the In-laws were coming to dinner. It must have been hard for them to keep eating them, but it was all I could cook.
