What's the most stolen item in supermarkets? Undercover security guard spills shocking truth!

Shopping habits have gone through many changes in the past year, and while most Aussies are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living, there’s also been a worrying spike in shoplifting and theft.

Popular presenters of the morning radio talk show, the Kyle and Jackie O Show, Kyle Sandilands and Jackie 'O' Henderson, were left stunned when an undercover security guard spilt the beans about the most stolen item from supermarkets.

‘For the month of July, I’d like you guys to guess what was the most stolen item,’ the guard asked the pair.

The duo made different guesses, with Kyle opting for razor blades due to their high comparative value, making them a prime target.

Jackie suggested it could be tampons–an everyday essential, making it a likely candidate.

However, the caller upturned all expectations, revealing that the item most often 'pilfered' was not either of these but...barbecue chickens!

'They’re stealing them out of the rotisserie?’ Kyle asked in disbelief, which the caller confirmed yes.

Jackie queried, 'Where are they putting it to steal it?'

Unbelievably, the undercover officer caught two people who stashed the stolen chooks down their pants.

'Holy s***! A whole chicken!' Jackie exclaimed.

Kyle questioned the attire that enabled this feat, and it was revealed to be track pants.

'Trackies. Yeah, big trackies,' the caller replied.

This might provide some comical relief, but the broader issue at hand is rising prices. This rise in grocery theft brings our attention to the hard-hit being taken by Aussie households due to living costs and food inflation.

This was highlighted in a recent video by Elly Vickere, who took to social media after a trip to Coles.

She spent $45 on her trip, only to come home with merely two boxes of teabags, two loaves of bread, a pack of chicken Kievs and lactose-free milk–which she said seemed a significant pinch to the pocket for such everyday items.

By contrast, Elly spent just over half that amount, $26, on the same day at a local fresh food grocer and received a sizeable stack of fresh vegetables.

Such revelations certainly make one think twice about their shopping habits. With the rising costs in supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths, it appears the traditional, even nostalgic way of filling up our kitchen pantries and fridges from local farmers' markets or grocers might be the way to go–not just for our wallets but for the freshness and quality of produce as well.

Key Takeaways
  • A Kyle and Jackie O Show caller revealed that the most stolen item in Australian supermarkets is barbecued chickens.
  • The undercover officer stated that thieves often hide the stolen chickens in their baggy track pants.
  • The revelation came at the heels of a shopper named Elly Vickere voicing her frustration about rising supermarket prices and encouraging shopping at farmers' markets and local greengrocers as a cheaper alternative.

OK...here goes.

A man arrives home from Coles after stealing a flathead by stuffing it down his trackpants. His missus says "What smells? You didn't go to the supermarket. You've been with that floozie up the street!"

Please don't ban me....please!
I thought it might be Gideon's Bible but since we're all turning into heathens, it's probably dropped down a few places.
When I owned my lodge it was always towels and always the expensive fluffy ones , and condiments😁never bibles or batteries😁

Hope the chooks didn’t get put back on the shelves.

A couple of years back, 3AW breakfast session asked the question about the most stolen article in a supermarket. A security guard had told the presenter the answer. Presenter threw the phone lines open and took about 15 calls before a woman answered "vitamin pills." Correct, he said, and asked how she could possibly have known.
She replied that she had a youngster and would "steal" a piece of fruit for him to keep him calm and occupied. (This was before supermarkets offered free fruit for kids.) She would then put the skin/peel in a rubbish bin instore and was always amazed at the number of empty pill containers in the bin. Wasn't hard for her to realize the contents of the containers were in purses or pockets.

Now I know bbq chooks are shrinking in size by the day but the mind boggles as to where you could put a hot roast chicken in trackpants that it wouldn’t fall out, there would be some burnt tenderloins involved for sure. Gives new meaning to the saying “hot to trot”.
