What was the 'big awakening' that transformed Sunrise star and first-time dad Sam Mac?

Fatherhood is a magical journey that can have a profound impact on a person–and this has rung true for Sunrise star Sam Mac.

The Sunrise weather presenter celebrated his first Father’s Day with his daughter Margot and wife Rebecca.

Sam and his partner welcomed their little bundle of joy, Margot, into the world last September and life, as Sam knows it, has been transformed ever since.

Priorities simply become re-ordered in parenthood, with Sam soon discovering the more profound effects of bringing a child into the world.

'Instantly, you have a new number one priority, and that is your baby,' Sam said.

'Then obviously, there’s a lot that flows from that.'

Things change, like how you look at your partner, just these extra layers of connection, love, respect and admiration.'

But it was also an eye-opening experience for Sam when it came to realising how much his parents had sacrificed raising him.

'I think most of us just take for granted that our parents look after us, feed us, do all those things because it’s always been that way, and they’ve always been there,' he said.

'I was behaving like a spoiled little brat, so I think it’s a bit of a reality check, and that really makes me appreciate my parents and what they have done for me.'

'That’s been a big awakening in a positive way,' he added.

Sam now gets to experience the world through his daughter's eyes, seeing all the little amazing things and moments he never would've noticed before.

One instance is a swing—a childhood playground fixture he never really gave much thought to.

'All of a sudden, Margot’s on the swing for the first time,' he shared.

'And seeing her face light up to this level that I’ve never seen before, and her leaning back and just staring up into the sky, it was just blowing her mind.'

'I love little moments like that, little experiences like that.'

Sam now also has a 'new level' of excitement for zoos and aquariums, despite visiting them often for Sunrise.

'Now that I’m thinking about taking Margot there, it’s a whole new level of wow factor, because I’m going to be seeing her pointing at a shark at the aquarium, seeing a giraffe in real life,' he said.

'It absolutely changes how you see everything because everything is new.'

He also described his daughter as 'very alert and very observant'.

'Every parent thinks their child is a genius, but I’ve noticed if she sees a tiny animal on a logo on a shirt you’re wearing, or if she notices a reflection of a light behind you, she really wants to explore them and fixates on them' Sam explained.

Sam claimed his daughter has already developed her own adorable personality–with little signs of both Bec’s personality and his personality in hers.

Margot is also described as being 'very refined' just like her mum.

'She really picks little bits of food and then gently puts them into her mouth–she’s quite an impressively clean eater,' Sam said.

On the other hand, Sam and his child reportedly both enjoy 'quirky out-of-the-box things'.

Margot also shares her parents’ love for the Harry Potter series, as she laughs every time she sees her elf Dobby doll.

'She really laughs at the Dobby doll that we have,' he says.

'Bec and I both love Harry Potter and Dobby’s my favourite character, and Dobby, you know, is a quirky freaky-looking little elf, and obviously adorable and cute.'

'But she loves something about the shape of the face, the googly eyes and whenever we move that around, she’s so captivated by it.

'So hopefully, she’s got my sense of quirkiness and thinking a bit outside of the box, and I’m hoping that she’s got a sense of humour.'

Sam shared that he has much to teach his daughter about life and the world. But below are three key future lessons he hopes to teach his daughter:

'I guess the main thing for me is pretty simple really–and that is to be kind to everybody,' Sam said.

The second would be 'to never lose your sense of humour' and the last is to always have a 'sense of wonder'.

And speaking of sense of humour and wonder, you might be interested to know that Sam started Father’s Day with a ‘thoughtful’ gift from his family: an ‘age prevention’ facial mask!

He captioned the photo: ‘Thank you “Margot” for this “thoughtful” gift on my very first Father's Day.’

‘A gift that was in no way influenced by your “kind”, “generous”, & “loving” Mother @rebeccajames_stylist,’ he jokingly said.
