What is the world's sexiest accent? Edwina Bartholomew sparks intense debate on Sunrise

Accents. Sometimes, they serve as a source of pride and identity, but they also tend to come with connotations of attraction and desirability. Everyone has their preferences, and that's a fact!

So when an online dating website survey revealed that nearly half of Australians admit that they're attracted to foreign accents, it got us wondering: What is the world's sexiest accent?

This topic had the hosts from Sunrise debating, with well-loved Aussie presenter Edwina Bartholomew at the helm. When asked if she had her own 'favourite', Edwina's response was not what everyone expected: Scottish accents!

'I think I'd take Scottish over French. Not to share too much information, given that my husband isn't Scottish, that probably reveals too much, but anyway...' she cheekily confessed, much to the amusement of her fellow presenters.

According to a survey by the online dating website eHarmony, the most popular accents overall were British English, and French, each at 41 per cent. Following closely were Italian at 32 per cent and Irish at 30 per cent.

The French accent was deemed the most romantic, with 56 per cent of respondents associating it with romance. Italian and Spanish followed, with 41 per cent and 16 per cent respectively.

British English maintained its reputation as the most sophisticated accent (42 per cent) while also being perceived as the most intelligent (44 per cent) and honest (32 per cent).

Italian and Irish accents remained in the second and third spots for overall popularity at 32 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively.

People with accents enjoy an advantage, as 42 per cent of respondents believed accents enhance attractiveness.

The survey results led the talk show hosts to question why Aussie Chris Hemsworth topped the list for 'most attractive celebrity accent', with Shirvo quipping: 'It's something to do with his deep voice too, right, like that Aussie voice. It's nothing about the abs and arms.'

As for Australian accents, most respondents felt it is perceived internationally to be laid-back and friendly (70 per cent).

However, the Aussie twang didn't fare particularly well, with 44 per cent of respondents branding it 'bogan' and only 14 per cent considering it sophisticated and 21 per cent considering it exotic.

It looks like language truly has a lot of power, especially in the world of romance!

Foreign languages and accents can be enticing to a lot of people. I find I am quite drawn towards the Irish accent personally but I do find a problem with it and other languages/accents though.
Foreign languages and accents also depend on their country's way of life and how they live.
If you meet a lovely Irish lass with a beautiful accent to go with it, this doesn't mean that her attitude is a major drawcard due to her way of life and upbringing in her country.
Comparing accent with attitude can be all the difference it takes to either like or dislike the accent.

oui oui oui is so bogan. i speak kiwi and after 30+ years still have the twang. British I will be.

I love the Scottish and Irish especially on women. I came to Australia in 1960 as a 3.5 year old met my wife in 1980 and her friends said oh he's English and I still have an accent never tried to give it up
