What does Australia Day mean to you?

Hey everyone, happy Australia Day!

How are you spending the day? Whether you're enjoying a BBQ, soaking up the outdoors, or just taking a moment to reflect, we hope you’re having a great time.

I also know today might not be an easy day for everyone, and I want to acknowledge that. It’s a day to think about where we've been as a country and where we’re headed.

Now I'm curious—what does Australia Day mean to you? Share your thoughts and reflections below!

My opinion is that we should celebrate this great nation of Cosmopolitan people in Australia. In saying that I know the atrocities that were bestowed on the native indigenous Australians, from genocide to slavery etc, it was horrendous. I feel this history should be taught in our schools so the young a aware of our Nations true history. It was the British that came to Australia, with convicts from Britain and Ireland which many had stolen food, a loaf of bread etc to be deported. If they survived which many did not they were thrown into slavery.
I, myself was born in Australia so I call myself indigenous to Australia so I will celebrate our wonderful country no matter how horrific our history is, but its our history that has made us better, and yes there are still bad in all different shades or colour of our skin, but I look forward to the good and how we have changed through out time to make this a wonderful place to live with our families. Reflect if you may on our history but appreciate how far we have come with our new generations.
Celebrate our Australia of wonder and beauty as it is a great place to live.

Happy Australia Day everyone 🇦🇺❤️🇦🇺❤️🇦🇺❤️🇦🇺❤️🇦🇺❤️🇦🇺❤️🇦🇺❤️🇦🇺
Let’s celebrate our wonderful country and celebrate how lucky we are to be living and enjoying the freedom we have, let’s celebrate all those that came before us who fought and died so we could have the freedom to enjoy this wonderful country , let’s make it a great place to live for EVERYONE. Have a happy Australia Day 🇦🇺❤️🇦🇺❤️

Australia Day is a day that I can celebrate being a proud and happy Australian. I came to Australia with my parents at the age of 8 from UK. Since then I have travelled all over the world, but this is my country and I feel safe here. Tears well up when I hear the song, "Great Southern Land" it raises deep love for this country within me.
It makes me angry when people that live here are protesting, they are lucky to be living here, in a country where there are no wars or persercution, so be proud and love the country you live in.

Angry certainly is the emotion raised why indeed don’t they “ take the train “ and get to hell out the way of this country and it’s ever so lucky inhabitants enjoy it for its past, yes it’s past present n future let the “ No sayers “ leave this precious building

Australia Day, why the 26th of January?
Because:

1. In 1948 the then-Commonwealth Government introduced the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 (Cth).
2. This document introduced the principle of citizenship for Australians as belonging to Australia, rather than Britain. Like the citizens of all the countries comprising the British Commonwealth, Australian citizens remained British subjects up to the proclamation date of this Act.
3. The Act was proclaimed (became Law) on 26 January 1949 and Australians became and were recognized as citizens of their own country.
4. Unlike the Australian Constitution Act and subsequent legislation, the Nationality and Citizenship Act did not discriminate against Indigenous people, implicitly including them through the more logical use of the term 'natural-born'. This means all Australians, including Indigenous Australians, became Australian citizens under this Act on January 26, 1949.

Anyone thinking of changing the date has not done their homework. This includes all from the top down.

I also note that this important date in Australian history should have been common knowledge for all students since 1949.

I cannot see any reason for anyone not to enjoy and celebrate this day and leave the date exactly where it is.

A Little History about this very special day!

Australia Day, why the 26th of January? Because:

Have a great day as you celebrate this day.

Happy Australia Day everyone.
I think of our special day as a time to reflect on our history mainly the treatment of our Indigenous people, as well as the poor convicts who were treated so badly yet built so many of our wonderful old buildings, then to celebrate the amazing country that we have become. Australia isn’t perfect but faults & all why would you want to live anywhere else?
