Reading the above notes I remember the first loaf of bread I made on the station - set the yeast to rise on the rack near the chimney - old wood stove - while away with milking - came back and it was everywhere so scraped together what I could added flour etc and baked. mmm couldn't get a knife in it - ended up getting painted and used as a door stop for years till we changed jobs

I love diced beetroot in a tuna salad
I love beetroot of any kind, used to buy beetroot sandwiches once a fortnight at the school canteen. The woman eventually gave up asking me, don't you want something else with it.🧂

A few years ago I decided to make an eggless fruit cake which I found the recipe on a CWA cookbook. The cake was a complete disaster but my 2 dogs enjoyed it immensely.

My disaster happened in the late 70’s when we were experiencing electricity load shedding.
I put a pan of oil on the stove to heat up to cook chips. Before the potatoes made it into the hot oil the power went off. My little toddler ran to me scared because the lights went out. I totally forgot about the pan on the stove as and just wanted to get my son out of the way because the table and chairs were a tripping hazard, not to mention we were in front of the stove.
The power didn’t come back on for many hour so we went to bed.
No, the house didn’t burn down (and it was an old Queenslander) but the VJ boards were well scorched. But what was even worse, my little boy was asleep in the room directly off the kitchen.
That was one close call.
