What’s in a name? Discover the secret history behind the Celebrations chocolate name and logo

As part of our usual evening snack, mid-afternoon treat or even just to ease the stresses of the day, chocolates are a great option for most.

This holiday season, you may have come across Celebrations — a wonderful assortment of bite-sized chocolates featuring chocolate brands offered by Mars, Incorporated, including the titular Mars Bars, Twix, Snickers, Bounty, and Maltesers.

Truly, in each box of Celebrations, there’s something for every chocolate-lover!

But while we're certainly not complaining seeing as they taste SO good, do you ever wonder how Celebrations got its name?

It’s quite amazing how it captures the joy there is in eating chocolates, and with a variety of flavours at that!

Well, look no further: A new documentary has finally revealed the amazing secret behind it!

Channel 4's popular series The Secret World Of… featured Christmas chocolates in one episode, which gave viewers a rare insight into what goes into making various famous bars and candies around the silly season.

Featuring interviews with several chocolate industry professionals, one guest — General Manager of Mars Michelle Frost —- spoke about where this very sought-after product’s name came from.

Frost shared that they were thinking of ways to catapult Mars Incorporated’s chocolates to the top of the chocolate market when she thought of offering their most popular brands in one package.

‘Oh gosh, what are we going to call this thing?’ she recalled them thinking.

‘Two names stuck out to me: one was “Celebrations”, and one was “Jamboree”.’

‘So Celebrations could have been called “Jamboree”... but “Celebrations” summed up the occasion we wanted people to use this product for.’

But how would you market such an offering? Frost said they took cues from what was right in front of them the whole time.

‘We came up with this idea of using the logos from the brands part of Celebrations,’ she said.

Holding a box of Celebrations, she pointed out a surprising fact about the logo!

‘So the “B” is the “B” you see on Bounty. The “s” is the “s” from the Mars Bars,’ she said.

‘Not many people realise that because we got so used to seeing that.’

A closer look at the logo reveals other letters were also lifted from other chocolates.

For example, the ‘E’ and ‘N’ look like they came from Snickers, while the ‘l’ and ‘a’ come from Galaxy.

There is no un-seeing that amazing tidbit!

Bill Ronald, a former colleague of Frost’s, explained why ‘Celebrations’ was the perfect name for a holiday offering.

‘At Christmas time, what’s the reason we all go home? It’s to celebrate,’ he said.

‘So having a brand called “Celebrations” — my goodness, in hindsight, you could only say it will succeed.’

Earlier this year, Aussies had quite a scare when it was reported that Bounty chocolates would be taken out of Celebrations, but it was confirmed early last November that the chocolate-coconut confections are here to stay.

Speaking of celebrations, here’s another thing to be happy about!

Soon, all Mars-Wrigley chocolates will be covered in recyclable paper-based packaging as part of their commitment in Australia to be more sustainable.

So, you can all run along and spread the word to friends and family: Celebrations could have been named ‘Jamboree’, there’s more to the logo than meets the eye, and your favourite chocolates will come wrapped in environmentally friendly packaging in the near future!

Key Takeaways

  • Mars' Celebrations box of chocolates was created so that everyone could enjoy it during special occasions, and their logo uses the 'b' from Bounty and the 's' from Mars bar without many people realizing it.
  • A Mars Inc. executive also shared that Celebrations could have been named 'Jamboree' had things gone differently.
  • Celebrations was chosen for how it fit well with the holiday spirit.
This delightful admission of Frost isn’t the first logo tidbit we’ve featured. Remember when we told you about a hidden animal in Toblerone’s logo?

I didn't know the alternative name being considered was Jamboree.
They have been on the market for about 25 years now, and my son did an art project on the logo when he was in Primary school....using the wrappers from the bars and the wrappers from the Celebration chocolates...showing how they match.
The project was about patterns...
