Watch out: This Kmart item is causing injuries that need STITCHES

Many of us love shopping at Kmart. Really, though, who wouldn't? With such a huge range of low-cost everyday items, there's something for everyone! Whenever we're running a little low on household basics like mugs, glasses and other kitchenware, Kmart is usually our first port of call.

But of course, as die-hard bargain hunters ourselves here at SDC, we also know that a cheaper price tag isn't always going to guarantee quality. We have to be careful about what we're buying, especially when it comes to products that could have potential health risks.

Unfortunately, one Kmart mum learned the hard way that this particular rule definitely applies to one of the store's more affordable items – the Everyday Hiball glasses.

The shopper shared her story about how a piece of the retail store's glassware broke while she was washing it, leaving her with a nasty cut on her hand.

The glasses normally retail for only $4.50 for a set of six and – at first glance – they look sturdy. But don't let their price fool you; these glasses can be incredibly dangerous.

Taking to social media, the woman shared a warning with fellow Kmart shoppers after she experienced first-hand just how fragile the glasses can be.

She explained that when she was washing them, one of them suddenly broke off and 'popped', leaving her with a nasty cut on her hand that required immediate medical attention.

The incident has been seared into her memory, and she warned other group members to be very careful when buying the Everyday Hiball glasses.

'Be careful when buying these. They're pretty and cheap, but while washing them, one popped and cut my hand!' the mum wrote in her post on the Facebook group.

In the photo above, you can see that the mum has a cut on her hand, and you can also see the broken glassware on the sink. According to her, it took a while to stop the bleeding, and she was particularly worried about her ten-year-old, who usually helps her with the dishes.

Along with hers, other group members also started sharing their horror stories about the same Kmart item.

'This happened when my four-year-old was drinking from one; I don't know if maybe he bit it a little bit, but got a mouth of the glass. Was pretty concerning,' said one fellow parent.

'Same thing happened to me with these glasses. I was washing it up, and then the next minute, it exploded while my hand was in the glass, cutting my fingers and the sides of my hands,' commented another.

'My partner took me to the ED because it was bad, and I had to get stitches. I will never buy glasses from Kmart again!'

The affected customers also mentioned that they had already contacted Kmart about the issue, but they were allegedly met with indifference regarding the product's quality.

'I called my local Kmart store to advise them of what had happened, and they didn't seem to care too much. Just asked me if I wanted to bring them back in for a refund. Just because something is $4.50 [shouldn't] mean it's okay for them to break the way this one did,' said another member of the Facebook group.
Key Takeaways

  • Kmart has a $4.50 Everyday Hiball glass that has caused significant injuries, with some people needing stitches after broken pieces cut them.
  • Many Kmart customers have shared their own horror stories about the glasses; in addition to breaking while hand-washing them, many have also broken while being used.
  • While Kmart has not given any official comment on the matter, shoppers have agreed to avoid these glasses.
Members, we urge all of you to be extra careful. Assess the weight and quality of the product before purchasing, and make sure you're washing it with proper care.

What are your thoughts, folks? And just like the mum in the story, have you ever had a similar experience or another close call with a Kmart product? Let us know in the comments!

I bought my everyday use glasses from Aldi, also cheap as chips but they are thick glass, look something similar to what was available in the war, built bomb proof!! They wash up beautifully and after 4 years almost constant use are as good as new. :)

Yep! Always take care washing glasses. Not too much pressure and not in hot water. BUT having a four year old drink from a glass took me back a bit🫣Rather not risk it with any type of glass😧
