Watch out for this 'dangerous' lawn mowing hack making the rounds online!
For a lush, healthy lawn in the spring, it's crucial to take care of your lawn during the cooler months. Even though the grass may grow more slowly (or seem to stop growing altogether) in cold environments, winter lawn care is still necessary.
However, we must warn our members to be wary of the advice they follow. Take a look, for instance, at this TikTok lawn-mowing method that has been going viral on social media.
In people's quest to cut down the time they spend on lawn care, they came across this video tutorial demonstrating how to quickly fill in the 'bald spots' in a patchy lawn.
Oliver Joseph, who goes by the handle 'roamwildwitholiver' on TikTok, has built quite a huge following for his home and gardening videos. In one of his most recent videos, he demonstrated a gardening hack he learned from his dad, which the old man calls 'the hair transplant'.

The goal of this method is to hide the bald spots on a lawn that have appeared because of cooler weather.
Here, the trick is to take the grass catcher off of the lawnmower and prop open the rear cover (he used a sturdy stick to prevent the cover from closing down).
This will allow the clippings to be redistributed more evenly across the lawn as you mow the yard. Joseph says that aside from hiding them, the grass clippings also help the grass grow in the bald patches.
Since its initial upload, the video has been viewed more than 2.2 million times on the platform, and it has been shared across a variety of social media networks.
While the hack does achieve what it sets out to do, it also exposes the person mowing the lawn to harm, as several lawn experts and TikTok users have noted in the comments section of the video.
That's because if you leave the back of a lawnmower open, plenty of small objects that you may not notice (such as rocks, plastic caps, and even glass shards) could go through the mower, come out the back, and fly right at you at full speed.
These projectiles have the potential to injure not only you but also any other people or animals that are in the area, especially if they managed to land in the face or eyes of the victim.
As well as safety concerns, this will also spread any pesky weeds over your entire lawn. (Yeah, we'll pass.)
Instead of using this risky gardening technique, lawn experts advise investing in a mulching mower to get the same results without the risk of projectiles that could hurt you.
This kind of lawnmower is made to spit out 'mulched' grass as it trims your lawn, leaving behind clippings that will feed your garden with plenty of nutrient-rich compost.
'Unlike with this hack, mulching mowers are designed for this purpose, so you'll avoid any issues with flying rocks!' they said.
There you have it, folks… We all want a beautiful, green lawn, but it's not worth injuring yourself over!
