WATCH OUT: Coles urgently recalls packets of baby spinach due to potential salmonella contamination

Watch out, members – a popular veggie buy at supermarkets is being urgently recalled by Coles. If you have done your grocery shop last week, we suggest double-checking your grocery items!

Coles is conducting an urgent recall of baby spinach packets sold in Coles supermarkets, Coles Local and through Coles Online across three regions: Queensland, Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales (excluding Coles stores in Lavington, Deniliquin and Albury).

Government agency Food Standards Australia and New Zealand says the recall is due to potential microbial (Salmonella) contamination, which was found after quality testing by its supplier.

A statement from Coles read: "As a precaution, Coles is recalling all three Baby Spinach products sourced from this supplier. Only the Baby Spinach products with the specific use-by dates detailed below are being recalled. No other Coles pre-packed spinach or salad products are impacted by this recall."

The affected products have been available for sale since 4 April 2022 and are identified as follows:
  • Coles Baby Spinach 60g Use By 13 APR 22
  • Coles Baby Spinach 120g Use By 13 and 14 APR 22
  • Coles Baby Spinach 280g Use By 13 and 14 APR 22
Customers with packets of spinach with specific use-by dates have been urged to immediately return their items for a refund.

So members, if you find yourself with the recalled item, you can return it to the store you bought it from or to any Coles supermarket for a full refund. Coles Online customers can receive a full refund or credit by contacting the Online Customer Care line on 1800 455 400.

And of course, this advice goes without saying: don't consume or eat it! Salmonella poisoning can be more severe for older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

Here are the symptoms to watch out for:
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
If you're concerned about your health, we suggest seeking medical advice immediately.
