Was it really an accident? Police allege man staged wife’s death to claim $1M insurance payout

What seemed like a tragic accident on a serene Queensland lake has taken a dark turn, raising questions of foul play and deceit.

As new details emerge, the case is now under intense scrutiny, with serious charges being brought forward.

The investigation has unveiled a complex web of suspicion that continues to unfold.

What was initially thought to be a tragic kayaking accident in Queensland has turned into a shocking case of suspected foul play.

Graeme Davidson, 55, who now resided in Thailand, was charged with murder, fraud, and attempted fraud over the 2020 drowning of his wife, Jacqueline.

Jacqueline Davidson, 54, died in November 2020 after being pulled from Lake Samsonvale, north of Brisbane, where she had been kayaking with her husband.

Despite efforts from onlookers and emergency services to revive her, Jacqueline was declared dead at the scene.

The incident was initially deemed an accidental drowning, and no foul play was suspected at the time.

However, a police investigation conducted for a coroner’s report uncovered troubling new evidence.

After about 18 months to two years of investigation, homicide detectives launched a probe into the case.

‘Police are alleging the male person was involved in the drowning in the lake,’ said Detective Acting Inspector Steve Windsor.

Under Operation Victor Harlow, detectives gathered witness testimonies and expert statements, including information on the conditions of the lake at the time.

The lengthy and complex investigation eventually led to Graeme Davidson being charged with murder, fraud, and attempted fraud following his arrest in Brisbane.

‘The cause of death was drowning but it was a case of talking to witnesses and gaining further evidence that the matter appeared suspicious,’ Windsor said.

‘Incidents are not always what they initially seem, so I thank the detectives for their diligent work in this lengthy and arduous investigation.’

Windsor stated that the couple had been living together, but police would allege there had been a ‘breakdown in the relationship’ leading up to Jacqueline’s death.

It was also alleged that Graeme Davidson had made a life insurance claim after his wife’s death and had attempted to make another one, which were linked to the fraud charges.

‘The combined life insurance was in excess of $1m,’ Windsor said.

‘They were quite extensive.’

While Graeme Davidson had been living in Thailand for several years, police had discussed the possibility of extraditing him.

However, authorities decided against it and chose to charge him after he returned to Brisbane for family reasons.

Graeme Davidson was denied police bail and appeared before Brisbane Magistrates Court on 5 May.

He did not attend the court session and was remanded in custody, with the matter adjourned until 19 May.
