Vigoro

Have you ever played Vigoro? It's a delightful combination of tennis and cricket that was popular among high school girls in the 1960s. The balls used in Vigoro are lighter than those used in cricket, and the bat has a unique shape with a handle that resembles a paddle.

The game is played by two teams, each with 12 players, taking turns batting and fielding for two innings. The objective is to score more runs than the opposing team.

I played both vigoro and rounders in the 50's at Riverside Girls Domestic Home Science School. I also played tennis and cricket and swam. I played hockey on the weekend. Can you imagine kids being this energetic these days?

I don’t remember how to play the game but I remember the bat. We it in primary school. One day 2 girls were fighting over packing up the kit and both let go of the bat at once and it hit me in the mouth, knocking out my front tooth. As a result I have had a false tooth since I was about 12. Lucky for me at my age now it is the only false tooth that I have.

Yes as a pupil of a catholic school in a little village called Yoogali in NSW, I remember playing vigaro and rounders (similar to baseball but with a round bat, tennis ball and 4 bases set around a circle. We also played netball but as girls, were not allowed to play "mens basketball". We still sneaked a game in without being caught! Mind you, we were also known to have a game of marbles against the boys at lunchtime also. Oh the memories these games dredge up - I think I loved my innocence in childhood.
