Video Rental Shop

Do you remember frequenting a video rental shop? Browsing the aisles of VHS tapes and DVDs used to be a regular activity for many. However, the rapid evolution of technology has phased out those once-popular stores, such as Blockbuster, Video Ezy, and Civic Video. Do you remember choosing movies at the local video store for family movie nights? We'd love to read them here!

I remember having to join the first in Albany by " buying" a video for $70 back in 1982. The video player cost $800. This video was then swapped for a rental for $7.

I actually worked in a video shop on the Gold Coast many years ago. The shop had been established for some time and the proprietor decided to put all the customers details on computer and I had the job to do that. It was very enjoyable to me and I could borrow a video any time I wanted without having to pay the fee. You can imagine the choice I had!

I remember hubby didn’t like the idea of renting videos to use in our new video player, so we used to buy them. We still have a huge collection, a lot of old time sets, cartoons, mother and son, beverly hillbillies, ma and pa kettle, dad and Dave to name a few. Lots of more modern ones as well. Lots of dvds as well. We still play these for the grandkids, they get lots of laughs from them. When I was in aged care I used to go to the video rental shop every week as we were allowed to “borrow” five videos, later dvds, free of charge every week for the entertainment of our clients in the nursing homes/hostels. It was hard to choose as clients liked musical ones, cowboys and Indians, western ones. The ladies liked romantic ones. We usually ended up with one from every different category. It was a great service.

My niece married a guy whose family owned the video shop in a country town. Business was booming, they made a fortune from that little shop. My niece and her hubby inherited it after his parents passed away and ran it for a good many years. They were lucky and sold it to a big chain, for a very good price, before the demise of video shops. It then closed after about two years as there was no longer enough business to make it worthwhile.

Do I remember! It only seems like yesterday I was borrowing videos and sadly have not moved on since except to SBS on demand which I enjoy thankfully.

When videos first came out my husband who loves all things electronic just had to buy a video machine. We were so excited and $1200 later (!) we had our very own Sony taking pride of place in the lounge room.
A lot of early video offerings were pretty ordinary to say the least but we did have a lot of fun with it and video rental outlets sprang up everywhere. We really enjoyed that machine and both working with no kids had the money to afford it. Of course they were later replaced by DVDs and I think the last one we bought a couple of years ago was only about $60! How times have changed!
