Victorian seniors eligible to free weekend rides soon! Here's how much you can save

If you’re a Victorian senior, there’s some fantastic news on the horizon that could put hundreds of dollars back in your pocket—and open up a world of weekend adventures across the state! Starting 1 January 2026, the Victorian Government is rolling out a game-changing initiative: free public transport on weekends for all Victorian Seniors Card holders. That’s right—trains, trams, and buses across the entire state, absolutely free every Saturday and Sunday.

Let’s break down what this means for you, how much you could save, and how to make the most of this new benefit.

What’s Changing?

Currently, Victorian seniors enjoy free weekend travel, but only within two neighbouring fare zones. That’s handy for local trips, but if you’ve ever wanted to visit the grandkids in Geelong, take a day trip to Bendigo, or explore the coast at Warrnambool, you’d still be paying for part of your journey.

From 2026, those restrictions are gone. Seniors will be able to travel for free on weekends across all 16 fare zones—meaning you can hop on a train in Wodonga and ride all the way to Melbourne, or take a bus from Ballarat to the Bellarine Peninsula, without spending a cent on fares.

How Much Can You Save?

The government estimates that regular senior travellers could save up to $360 a year with this new policy. That’s money that could go towards a nice meal out, a special treat for the grandkids, or simply help with the rising cost of living.

And the savings don’t stop there. This move builds on the regional fare cap introduced in 2023, which already slashed the cost of longer trips—like Bendigo to Melbourne—from over $24 to under $10 for concession holders. Since then, Victorians have saved an estimated $132 million on regional travel, and now, seniors stand to save even more.

Why Is This Happening?

Premier Jacinta Allan says the goal is simple: to make it easier for seniors to see family, enjoy a day out, or experience the best of Victoria—without worrying about the cost. 'Costs can add up, especially for seniors, and I’m on their side,' she said.

The government also hopes the move will boost regional tourism, with more seniors able to visit country towns, markets, and attractions. Local businesses and tourism operators are expected to benefit from the influx of weekend visitors.

How Do You Access Free Weekend Travel?

It’s easy! Here’s what you need to do:
  • Hold a Victorian Seniors Card: You must be aged 60 or over, a permanent resident of Victoria, and working less than 35 hours per week.
  • Use your Senior myki: Touch on and off as usual when you board public transport. The system will record your trip, but no fare will be deducted on weekends.
  • Carry your Seniors Card: You may be asked to show it as proof of eligibility.
On weekdays, seniors will still enjoy a 50% discount on fares—so you’re saving money every day of the week.

What About Extra Services?

To make sure everyone can take advantage of the new offer, the government has already added nearly 200 extra V/Line weekend services under the regional fare cap scheme. So whether you’re planning a spontaneous day trip or a weekend getaway, there should be plenty of seats available.

Tips for Making the Most of Free Weekend Travel
  • Plan a new adventure: Why not visit a town you’ve never been to, or catch up with friends and family who live further afield?
  • Explore Victoria’s hidden gems: From the wineries of the Yarra Valley to the historic streets of Ballarat, the state is full of places to discover.
  • Travel with friends: Organise a group outing—there’s nothing like a day out with good company, and now it’s even more affordable.
  • Check timetables: With extra services running, it’s easier than ever to plan your journey. Visit the PTV website or use the app for up-to-date information.

In NSW we have a daily cap of $2.50 for all trips on public transport for the day. We used to travel into the city and pay for parking but it is so expensive now as well as adding petrol and the cost of tolls. We have been enjoying going on the train, bus, light rail for little trips out for the day with our transport not costing the earth for the last few years. I actually like that we pay a little that is affordable for seniors - this way we are paying our way. We even had a day out in Manly which included going on the ferry and also another day we went into the city by ferry from Paramatta. Our trip on the train is only 20 minutes, if we drive it is about one hour or more depending on the traffic plus the stress. When the public transport is working well it is a great advantage.

In South Australia it is Free travel for seniors everyday….so we are not as “backward “ as some may think 🤔
All day, everyday has been since 2022!!
Yes indeed. Here in South Australia we lead Australia in many innovative ideas. I would not want to live anywhere else. I have, but South Australia has so much to offer.

In Tasmania if you are legally blind and have a carer with you as well you both travel free in Queensland the carer travels free but I have to pay and I’m the one that is blind . Backward State Hope Chrisafoolie is taking notice what Victoria is doing

This is sad. Why only on weekends. Seniors prefer the laid back travel during the week. I don’t really know what day it is- we are always on the move during the week, and leave the weekend to families with children who work all week.
