Very MESSY issue at Woolies frustrates local shoppers: "Bad building design"

An eagle-eyed Melbourne resident has brought to light an unpleasant situation that happened outside of a Woolworths supermarket.

The customer, who was just walking by, noticed an unfortunate design detail at the entrance to the Chelsea Woolworths, which resulted in a ledge being placed directly above the doors that led into the store.

While this may appear to be a minor issue to most people, it became a problem for the local shoppers and store employees. What’s the big deal? Well, the building design allowed the area's local pigeon population to make their home on the overhang, causing quite a mess on the ground below.

Pigeons and other birds generally coexist with residents and shoppers in densely populated areas such as supermarkets. They can, however, inadvertently pose sanitary hazards due to their feathers, poo, and nasty bacteria they can carry like salmonella.

The concerned customer shared their thoughts on the matter on social media, stating that it is turning into a messy problem for customers as well as the employees of Woolies.

"Those who mock bad architecture will appreciate how poorly this Woolworths supermarket was designed," he wrote in his online post.

"A sub-roof edge finishes right above the main door. As a result, pigeons have made it their home with a daily cleaning task for staff."

The customer went on to say that the area is situated along a bay and is home to a variety of avian species.

"The core problem is bad building design. Lengthening or shortening the overhang would fix the problem," he continued, adding that the problem has existed since the building was opened to the public around 2010.

A spokesperson for Woolworths has already come forward and made a statement regarding the matter, saying that the supermarket is working to relocate the birds that are at issue in this situation.

"We take great pride in offering our customers a positive experience in our stores and we're sorry this may not have been the case for some of our customers at our Chelsea store," said the representative.

"We're working closely with our facilities management team on a bird relocation program and conducting a thorough clean of the store entrance to ensure it is an inviting environment for our customers."

It's possible that the avian flu isn't the only thing to be concerned about when it comes to birds. Birds and their droppings may carry more than 60 diseases, according to some studies.

The problem is especially worrisome in residential areas due to the fact that many of these diseases are airborne and can be transmitted to humans simply by being in close proximity to droppings.

Surely all they need to do is blank off the end of the overhang with a flush return to the roof, thereby removing any perching places for the birds. I wouldn't have thought it was too difficult and could probably be completed in a day.:)
