US Food and Drug Administration recalls 67 ice cream products after deadly contamination

There's nothing quite like indulging in a scoop of ice cream to treat ourselves after a long day.

A creamy dessert staple that can be enjoyed on its own or with other sweets, ice creams are a staple in supermarkets, restaurants, and even homes.

However, a recent announcement from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has put a bitter damper on these sweet treats.

The US FDA recalled 67 ice cream products from 13 ice cream brands due to a potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacterium that poses serious health risks.

The recall was initiated by Totally Cool, Inc. of Owings Mills, Maryland, after FDA sampling detected Listeria in their products.

The affected ice creams were distributed nationwide, available in retail locations and through direct delivery.

The brands involved in this recall include household brands like Friendly’s, Hershey’s, Jeni's, ChipWich, and more.

Hershey’s ice cream products are available in major retailers across Australia.

The extensive list of recalled products ranged from ice cream cakes, sundae cones, and ice cream sandwiches.

The full list of affected products, along with their specific lot codes and images, are on the FDA's website.

Listeria is an organism that can cause serious infections, particularly in children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

In severe cases, Listeria can cause fatalities.

Healthy individuals afflicted by Listeria may experience less severe symptoms like fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea.

In response to the discovery, Totally Cool, Inc. halted production and distribution of the products and took preventive measures to address the issue.

While no illnesses have been reported to date, the investigation into the contamination continues.

For those who may have purchased any of these items, stop the consumption and return the products to the place of purchase for full refunds.

Consumers can also reach out to Totally Cool, Inc. for questions.

For more detailed information on Listeria and its symptoms, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) website is a valuable resource.

We encourage you to share this information with friends and family to help prevent any potential health risks.
