Urgent warning urges Aussies to rethink travel to popular holiday hotspot

Dreaming of turquoise waters, swaying palm trees, and a cocktail in hand?

The Maldives has long been a bucket-list destination for many Aussies, promising postcard-perfect beaches and a slice of paradise just a flight away.

But before you dust off your passport and start shopping for new swimmers, there’s an important update you need to know.

The Australian Government’s Smartraveller website has just reviewed its travel advice for the Maldives, and it’s not all smooth sailing.

While the islands remain a top pick for sun-seekers, there are some serious safety concerns that every traveller should be aware of before booking that dream holiday.

The government is urging Australians to 'exercise a high degree of caution' when visiting the Maldives, especially on local islands and in the capital city, Malé.

This isn’t just a case of being wary of pickpockets or dodgy street food—there have been persistent risks of violent protests and even potential terror attacks in recent years.

Malé, which is not only the capital but also home to the country’s main international airport, has seen its fair share of unrest.

In 2020 and 2021, the city was the site of several terrorist incidents, including a stabbing attack in which an Australian tourist was injured.

While these events are rare, they’re a sobering reminder that paradise isn’t always as peaceful as it seems.

Here’s some good news: the luxury resort islands that the Maldives is famous for are generally considered safe and tranquil.

These private islands are well-guarded, and most visitors report nothing but blissful relaxation.

More than 2 million tourists visited the Maldives last year, and the vast majority enjoyed trouble-free holidays.

However, if you’re planning to venture beyond your resort—perhaps to explore local culture, visit Malé, or hop between islands—it’s essential to stay alert.

The government’s advice is clear: avoid large public gatherings, keep an eye on local news, and always follow the instructions of local authorities.

The Maldives has experienced political instability and civil unrest in recent years.

Demonstrations can turn violent with little warning, and tourists have occasionally been caught up in the chaos.

While the government and local police work hard to keep visitors safe, it’s always better to err on the side of caution.

Terrorism, while not common, remains a risk. The 2020 stabbing incident was a stark reminder that even idyllic destinations aren’t immune to global threats.

The Australian government’s advice is based on the most up-to-date intelligence and is designed to keep you safe.

For a safe and enjoyable trip to the Maldives, it’s wise to stick to resort islands if relaxation is your goal—these areas typically have tight security and minimal risk.

If you need to travel through Malé, stay alert, avoid large gatherings or protests, and don’t hang around longer than necessary.

Keep yourself informed by monitoring local media and signing up for Smartraveller updates.

Always follow instructions from local authorities, especially when it comes to safety, weather, or health advice.

Lastly, ensure your travel insurance includes coverage for political unrest and medical emergencies—it’s better to be prepared than caught off guard.

Many Australians who’ve visited the Maldives in recent years report nothing but positive experiences, especially on the resort islands.

However, a few have shared stories of unexpected delays or detours due to protests in Malé or heightened security at airports.

It’s always wise to allow extra time for transfers and to keep your travel plans flexible.

The Maldives is still a stunning destination and, for most visitors, a safe one.

But as with any overseas adventure, a little preparation goes a long way.

By staying informed and following official advice, you can enjoy your holiday with peace of mind.

I’ve always wanted to go to the Maldives but you’d need to take out a bank loan to afford it, it’s so expensive, even with the so called specials.☹️

Never been to Male but would expect people to follow the advice for travelling to places where there may be unrest. If they don’t do this then they can’t complain if there’s unfortunate incidents
