Urgent Recall: Popular brand of almond milk pulled from Woolies shelves due to botulism risk

Seniors Discount Club members, we have news of an urgent recall of a popular brand of almond milk after authorities found it was linked to a case of botulism.

Inside Out almond milk, which is sold at Woolworths stores in NSW, was pulled from the shelves this week due to biotoxin contamination (Botulinum toxin) risk after an individual in the same state was admitted to the hospital with 'severe symptoms' of botulism.

Botulism, an illness caused by deadly toxins that attack the nerves in the body, is very rare in Australia but it is still very dangerous and can cause life-threatening conditions.

If a person is suffering from botulism, the early symptoms can occur hours or days after consumption.

The recall applies to the JS Health x Inside Out Unsweetened Almond Milk (Collagen + Calcium + Prebiotics) with an expiry date of 01 March 2023. If you find this product in your fridge, please get in touch with Woolworth immediately to arrange a refund.

'The NSW Food Authority is investigating the manufacturing of the product to determine the possible cause of the contamination,' a statement from NSW Health said.

Botulinum toxin is a dangerous substance that can cause life-threatening illnesses, according to Keira Glasgow, Director of NSW Health’s One Health branch.

The symptoms of foodborne botulism can start with weakness, fatigue and vertigo, which are common for many health conditions. But as the illness progresses, victims may experience blurred vision, dry mouth, and difficulty swallowing - they might even feel nauseous and start vomiting.

The scariest part is that the symptoms can lead to paralysis of the arm muscles, and then slowly spread to the legs. If it gets worse, it can even affect the person’s breathing muscles and become fatal.
Key Takeaways

  • Inside Out almond milk, sold at Woolworths stores in NSW, was recalled due to the risk of biotoxin contamination - following a case of botulism in a person who had consumed the product.
  • Symptoms of botulism can include weakness, fatigue and blurred vision.
  • Anyone who has consumed this product and experiences symptoms is urged to seek medical assistance immediately.
In most cases, treatment for botulism may involve hospitalisation, where you may receive antitoxin medication and supportive care to help manage your symptoms. The good news is that if foodborne botulism is diagnosed and treated early, most people will recover.

It's important to keep in mind that the symptoms can appear within a few hours or up to several days after you consume contaminated food.

That is why it's crucial to pay attention to any changes in your body and seek medical attention as soon as possible if you suspect you may have been exposed to the Botulinum toxin.

One of the reasons I only use cow's milk, very easy to tell when it's going off?

There's a lot to be said by not playing around with milk. Stick to the past/d milk being fresh daily & the dry milk powder for icecream.
