Urgent recall announced! Did you buy 4WD snatch straps in the last five years?

If you’re a regular off-road driver who uses the trusty snatch straps to recover your four-wheel-drive when it gets stuck or bogged, you must pay attention to this urgent recall.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has announced a nationwide recall of Lion 4WD Recovery Snatch Straps.

It was found that these straps were not compliant with the mandatory safety standards for motor vehicles, as they do not come with the necessary warning label to be permanently attached to the straps.

Along with the warning label, a sheet containing the required instructions for use is also missing from the product, making it a safety hazard if used incorrectly.

The ACCC has warned that there is a 'risk of severe injury or death to users or bystanders if recovery straps are used incorrectly' and has recalled three models that were sold at Mitre 10, True Value Hardware, Home Hardware, and Thrifty Link Hardware stores across Australia from January 2017 until June this year.

These models include:
LA400A7-6000kg capacity,
LA400A10-10,000kg capacity,
LA400C6-11,000kg capacity.

If you have any of these straps, it is strongly advised to stop using them and check if they are missing the permanent warning label and instructions for use.

If they do not contain the label and instructions, please contact Lion (Aust) Consolidated P/L by phone on 03 9761 6199 or via email at [email protected] for assessment of the strap and relabelling or replacement if required.

Lion isn't exactly a quality brand and though these straps might work as specified when new to meet ADR standards they are very likely to degrade quite quickly in our Australian conditions. I have had so many Chinese synthetic webbing products fail within 2 to 3 years due to heat stress and even faster if UV comes into play. I just had to throw out some Chinese lifejackets that met ADR's when the straps that held them on you crumbled after about 3 years. Same has happened to me with tent tie downs, canvas bag straps, Synthetic rope from China (from Bunnings) and Chinese Dyneema winch rope. I guess you get what you pay for these days so better to buy the best safety and recovery gear. Go cheap on the less important stuff
