First things first, my fellow members of the SDC–if you have recently purchased pork from your local Coles or Woolies outlet, you might want to pull it out of the fridge and chuck it straight back into the shopping bag.
No, it hasn’t transformed into a singing swine, but an unplanned ingredient in the mix might pose a potential health risk.
Oriental Merchant Pty Ltd, the maker of the product, has undertaken a nationwide recall of its 260g Hanabi Marinated Pork Bulgogi. Specifically impacted are these items with best-before dates of 23/05/24 and 06/06/24.
This product was available at Coles in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia; and Woolworths in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.

Food Safety Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) have identified an allergen concern. Unfortunately, dear shoppers, this pork product may contain wheat or gluten, though it’s not declared on the product.

But we should remember allergens are no small matter. They could trigger a nasty reaction in individuals who have allergies or intolerances. These reactions range from minor inconveniences, like itching or rashes, to severe anaphylaxis. And gluten intolerance, or Coeliac disease, can cause severe discomfort and long-term health issues.
FSANZ advises, 'Any consumers who have a wheat/gluten allergy or intolerance may have a reaction if the product is consumed.'
Wheat allergy is one of the most common food allergies and is especially prevalent among children.
Given the potential for serious adverse reactions among those allergic or intolerant to wheat/gluten, the prudent step is not to consume it if you have such a condition.
Instead, take a moment to return it to the store of purchase, where you will be given a full refund. And while it's a bit of an inconvenience, we can all agree it's far better to avoid the risk of a health scare.
