United Airlines bans passenger after forced landing over mid-flight wine incident

We often hear about the horror stories of passengers that can risk a flight’s safety, and unfortunately, this one is no different.

A woman travelling with United Airlines has been temporarily banned from the airline after she allegedly caused pilots to divert a flight due to a drunken outburst.

According to a statement issued by the airline, the unidentified woman caused a ‘disruptive’ scene on the July 25 flight from Houston to Los Angeles, leading the pilots to make an emergency landing in Phoenix.

Several videos, uploaded to social media, show the woman arguing loudly with the flight attendants who repeatedly tell her to take her seat.

‘Another video of the Karen who couldn’t get her wine. We had to land the plane so she could get escorted off and causing us even more delays than we already had. Over wine,’ the caption of the video says.

The flight attendant is heard accusing her of drinking before boarding the plane, which she continues to deny and argue loudly over.

‘I knew you were drinking wine … and I still let you board,’ the flight attendant claimed. ‘I tried to help you.’

Other passengers are also seen screaming at her for disrupting their flight but to no avail.

After the woman refused to quiet down and return to her seat, the plane was forced to land, where she was then escorted off the plane by police. The aircraft continued its trip afterwards.

United Airlines stated that the woman had been banned from future flights. ‘The customer has been barred from future United flights while we review this matter,’ the airline said.

Nowadays, airlines grapple with a range of unruly behaviour from passengers who wish to avoid following the rules. This incident follows another high-profile case just a few weeks ago when a business class passenger onboard a trans-Atlantic flight threw a tantrum after not getting the meal of his choice.

One can only hope that these incidents are taken seriously and that it's a reminder for all passengers to remember that they can still get into serious trouble if they don't adhere to the rules.
