Typewriter​

Ah, the trusty typewriter! Who remembers the sound of those keys clacking away, the satisfying ding as you reached the end of a line, and the occasional struggle to change the ink ribbon? It’s hard to imagine now, in the age of sleek laptops and touch screens, but that simple machine was once the backbone of every office and newsroom. And let’s not forget the timeless typing exercises, like ‘The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog’ and ‘Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party.’ Do you have fond memories of the typewriter? Do you still have one of these?

I still have mine and it’s exactly the same one

Yes I have two typewriters. One is a REM.10 dated about 1918 and the other a much younger one! Not everything is original on the older one - the ribbon is a more modern one.

Hi I remember these typewriters as a much younger person worked all day behind one they were noisy and yes the ribbon was sometimes a nightmare to change but I think they had more character than the laptops and computers

I learnt shorthand and typing when I was employed by British Leyland Company in England and they paid you to learn then gave you a job as secretary which was fantastic. You had a menial job sorting post etc whilst you learnt and all the time being paid. Amazing

No I don't still own one. I do remember learning how to touch type, with a cover over my hands and keys and they'd play the song "The Yellow Rose of Texas" for us to get a good rhythm whilst typing. The goal was to at least be able to type 60 words per minute. The secretarial course was a one year TAFE course, including shorthand and business studies. The job created a good foot in the door to many different career options.

I do still have a typewriter but there is no way you can buy ribbons of ink for them anymore. I had hours of fun not only writing letters etc on it but also making pictures using the various keys.
