Try This 3-Ingredient Lavender Lemonade Recipe to Stay Cool This Spring

One of the best things about summer is that we finally get to enjoy all of the delicious fruits and vegetables that are finally in season – I’m thinking mango, watermelon, pineapple, and more. And what goes better with fresh produce than cold, refreshing drinks?

We here at the Seniors Discount Club have found a recipe for a summer drink that’s sure to hit the spot: lavender lemonade. This fragrant and flavourful beverage is perfect for enjoying on a hot day, and it’s incredibly easy to make. Best of all, it only requires three ingredients!

The ingredients? Lavender, lemon and honey. Lavender is cooling and calming, while lemon tang perfectly balances the distinctive scent. Even those who aren't enthusiastic about lavender's aroma on its own tend to appreciate the floral notes it brings to classic lemonade. While lavender can be bitter when added to food or drink, this lemonade is perfectly balanced by honey, which also offers a source of caloric energy when our appetite is lost to the heat!

Although this lavender lemonade's flavour is complex, it's delightfully easy to prepare. Simply brew, stir, and share the health benefits with friends and loved ones! It’s way better for you, the kids, and the grandkids than the traditional homemade lemonade recipe which is usually loaded with sugar.

If you’re worried about where you can source your lavender, there’s no need to fret. Maybe you have some in your garden? Your friend's garden? Maybe somewhere in the surrounding streets? If not, you can buy dried lavender online if you can’t find any fresh flowers out and about! Amazon has quite a few options you can look into! Just be sure the one you are buying is safe for consumption and not only decorative.

Ingredients
2 tablespoons of dried lavender (or 4 tablespoons of fresh)
2 cups of water
1/2 cup of honey
1/2 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice
Thinly sliced lemons for garnish (optional)

Method
  1. Chop up your dried lavender (or gather 4 tablespoons worth if using fresh) into small pieces. If you're using dried lavender, crush it up a little bit more with a mortar and pestle or with your hands.
  2. Put lavender and water into a pot, cover, bring to a boil, and turn off the heat. Let the lavender water sit for 30 minutes to 2 hours (the longer it sits, the stronger the flavour.)
  3. Strain the lavender from the water.
  4. Add honey and lemon juice and stir well.
  5. Let the lavender lemonade cool, garnish with slices of lemon and pour over ice to serve.
  6. Enjoy!

Not only will this lavender lemonade taste delicious, but it will also keep you cool and calm in the warmer weather. How will it keep you calm, you may be thinking? Well, according to one study out of Thailand, inhaling lavender essential oil was shown to help maintain healthy blood pressure, heart rate, and skin temperature—evidence that the oils in lavender are quite literally cooling. The group that smelled lavender also reported feeling more active, fresher, and relaxed than a control group inhaling a plant oil with very little scent. This is why night-time lotions often contain lavender scents to help you relax and sleep. So, you’re getting so much more than just a new, tasty summer drink!

So, what do you think, members? Will you give this lavender lemonade a try? Or do you prefer to stick to the classics? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
