Trump jokes about becoming pope as internet erupts with reactions

There’s never a dull moment regarding former US President Donald Trump.

Whether he’s making headlines for his political ambitions or off-the-cuff remarks, Trump always manages to keep the world talking—and this week was no exception.

During a recent press conference, a reporter threw Trump a curveball: ‘Who do you want to be the next Pope?’

With Pope Francis’ health in the news and speculation swirling about the future of the Catholic Church, it was a timely question.

But Trump’s answer was classic Trump—equal parts cheeky and eyebrow-raising.

‘I’d like to be Pope,’ he quipped, grinning at the cameras. ‘That’d be my No. 1 choice.’

The room erupted in laughter, but the former president wasn’t quite finished.

He went on to mention a more realistic candidate: ‘I don’t have a preference. I might say we have a cardinal that happens to be out of a place called New York who is very good,’ referring to Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York.

The exchange was quickly shared across social media, with clips of Trump’s ‘Pope’ moment going viral. As you might expect, the internet had a field day.

Within hours, social media was flooded with reactions.

Some users poked fun at the idea of ‘Pope Donald’, with one quipping: ‘The only holy thing about him is the golf swing he cheats on. He thinks 'The Cardinal' is just a baseball team.

Others pointed out the, shall we say, 'unique' qualifications required for the papacy.

‘I hate to say it, but we Catholics live by rules that he hasn’t followed. That would be a no-go for the pope. First, you have to be a good person. Second, being a rapist wouldn’t help. Adultery wouldn’t help either. I’m going to just stop there,’ wrote one commenter.

Another joked, ‘I think the prerequisite is 'need to be able to go into a church without bursting into flames.'

Of course, not everyone was convinced Trump was joking. ‘Trump. Does. Not. Joke,’ one user insisted, while another said, ‘We’ve officially crossed into divine comedy territory—minus the divine, just pure clownery.’

While Trump’s papal ambitions are (hopefully!) tongue-in-cheek, this isn’t the first time he’s floated eyebrow-raising ideas.

During his time in office, he famously suggested buying Greenland and even joked about making Canada the 51st state.

Despite the US Constitution's clear two-term limit, he’s also been coy about whether he’d seek a third term as president.

For many, these comments are just part of Trump’s larger-than-life persona—a blend of bravado, showmanship, and a knack for keeping himself at the centre of the conversation.

For those wondering, the answer is a resounding ‘no.'

According to centuries of Catholic tradition, the Pope must be a baptised male Catholic, usually a cardinal, and almost always someone with a long service history within the Church.

Trump, who is not Catholic and has never held a religious office, is about as far from papal material as you can get.

But that hasn’t stopped the jokes. As one wag put it, ‘The man who’s been indicted multiple times, paid hush money, and spreads hate daily wants to be Pope. Now he wants to be the next pope, and God help us.’

You might be wondering why this story is making waves here in Australia.

Well, it’s a reminder that in the age of social media, no comment—no matter how outlandish—goes unnoticed.

It also shows how public figures can use humour (or at least attempts at it) to deflect tough questions and keep themselves in the spotlight.

For our members, it’s a good chuckle and a chance to reflect on the sometimes bizarre intersection of politics, religion, and celebrity culture.

And let’s be honest—after the last few years, we could all use a laugh!

Not rude at all!
Just stating a simple fact!
Why would anyone get upset by what Trump has said?
Problem with the world and people of today is no one can see the funny side of anything.
Why do people continue to get upset and uptight about comments that have nothing to do with them?

I honestly don’t think this was done as a joke NO it was put on to see how many reactions from Trump supporters there would be . If they got such a great response like they worshipped him in the election campaign like he was Jesus Christ himself , I think he would have tried to take over the church . Example like he was going to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine in ONE day… Take over Greenland …make Canada their? State … Take over Gaza Stip and make it into ?? As on can see that is what he wants to be to the world . I haved ticked LIKE on the comments made this morning ,one especially made by member Jim Bowling
What utter bullshit!

Out of respect for the Pope, attendees were asked to wear appropriate attire, including a black tie, at his funeral. Trump showed his regard for the Pope by wearing a blue suit and a light blue tie, which basically says it all about a narcissistic, power-crazy, bully. Not content with decimating and dividing the U.S., he and his family are profiting handsomely from the cryptocurrency investments owned by Trump-affiliated entities making a conservative estimate of least $300 million since January, in trading fees alone, on sales of his meme coin and other digital currency, according to crypto experts. (at the same time disbanding a unit dedicated to cryptocurrency enforcement).
It is unbelievable that Americans accept him as their leader.
I noticed the blue suit while viewing the coverage, not knowing about the request, and thought it just typical of him to disregard normal protocol just to have himself noticed. What an ego!!

Zelenskyy didn’t wear a suit or tie but I guess that’s OK by you braindead Trump haters!

I am a devout Catholic, and when I saw an AI image of Trump in Papal vestments including the mitre, I saw RED!! He is the biggest hypocrite, most evil person on the planet. I'm surprised when he stepped into St. Peter's Basilica on the day of Pope Francis' funeral, that he wasn't struck down on the spot. He mocks God and we Catholics and it's a joke?! And he said to that reporter that he'd like to be Pope?! A convicted felon, rapist, predator, liar, two-timer, misogynist, etc are not prerequisites for the Papacy. The sooner he is put when he belongs- in a psychiatric ward of a jail, the better, for America and the world. I have seen dementia patients first-hand in hospitals and nursing homes, and his behaviour exhibits 100% for dementia and delusions of grandeur, to name some.

Donald Trump is so egotistical that he would be certain that he could be Pope. He does not have the humility, piousness, blameless persona to fulfill this role. He is a person who inflames others to do wrong, he is a cheat, a bankruptee, rapist and does not respect women. He has an ice creams hope in hell of becoming pope.

No different. Why a non married person is allowed to make rules about children, marriage and hear confessions sickens me. Let alone what the Catholic Church has covered up. Good combination

Well in view of the fact he doesn't take a salary...he has to make money somehow!
Yes by scuttling the American and world stock markets so that they post record losses just in time for him to swoop in and buy up heavily discounted stocks, ready to sell them when the markets turn around. Criminal act that should be censured by the ineffective judiciary.
USA - land of the free - not so free now that this bastard arrests even judges who disagree with him
USA - land of the brave - who? the spineless senators and bureaucrats who should be taking action against him but are too afraid and intimidated by the mongrel dog
GOD BLESS AMERICA - AND HAVE PITY ON THEM ALSO 🙏

Cannot believe the comments from such pathetic people.
Lighten up!
Trump has got you all sucked in!
All the brain dead sheep complaining about a tongue in cheek comment.
The reason we react is because we find this moron so objectionable that he would make even satan look like a wayward child. He is disrespectful to everyone and everything around him and thinks he has a God given right to subject the free world to his autocratic methods. When your own judiciary are arrested and paraded in handcuffs from their courtroom just because she disagreed with this brain dead cretin, you know that there is something rotten going one. This one is the rotten potato in the sack, stinking out and contaminating the rest of the bag!

There's still no proof that Trump created or posted those pictures!
