Trump jokes about becoming pope as internet erupts with reactions

There’s never a dull moment regarding former US President Donald Trump.

Whether he’s making headlines for his political ambitions or off-the-cuff remarks, Trump always manages to keep the world talking—and this week was no exception.

During a recent press conference, a reporter threw Trump a curveball: ‘Who do you want to be the next Pope?’

With Pope Francis’ health in the news and speculation swirling about the future of the Catholic Church, it was a timely question.

But Trump’s answer was classic Trump—equal parts cheeky and eyebrow-raising.

‘I’d like to be Pope,’ he quipped, grinning at the cameras. ‘That’d be my No. 1 choice.’

The room erupted in laughter, but the former president wasn’t quite finished.

He went on to mention a more realistic candidate: ‘I don’t have a preference. I might say we have a cardinal that happens to be out of a place called New York who is very good,’ referring to Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York.

The exchange was quickly shared across social media, with clips of Trump’s ‘Pope’ moment going viral. As you might expect, the internet had a field day.

Within hours, social media was flooded with reactions.

Some users poked fun at the idea of ‘Pope Donald’, with one quipping: ‘The only holy thing about him is the golf swing he cheats on. He thinks 'The Cardinal' is just a baseball team.

Others pointed out the, shall we say, 'unique' qualifications required for the papacy.

‘I hate to say it, but we Catholics live by rules that he hasn’t followed. That would be a no-go for the pope. First, you have to be a good person. Second, being a rapist wouldn’t help. Adultery wouldn’t help either. I’m going to just stop there,’ wrote one commenter.

Another joked, ‘I think the prerequisite is 'need to be able to go into a church without bursting into flames.'

Of course, not everyone was convinced Trump was joking. ‘Trump. Does. Not. Joke,’ one user insisted, while another said, ‘We’ve officially crossed into divine comedy territory—minus the divine, just pure clownery.’

While Trump’s papal ambitions are (hopefully!) tongue-in-cheek, this isn’t the first time he’s floated eyebrow-raising ideas.

During his time in office, he famously suggested buying Greenland and even joked about making Canada the 51st state.

Despite the US Constitution's clear two-term limit, he’s also been coy about whether he’d seek a third term as president.

For many, these comments are just part of Trump’s larger-than-life persona—a blend of bravado, showmanship, and a knack for keeping himself at the centre of the conversation.

For those wondering, the answer is a resounding ‘no.'

According to centuries of Catholic tradition, the Pope must be a baptised male Catholic, usually a cardinal, and almost always someone with a long service history within the Church.

Trump, who is not Catholic and has never held a religious office, is about as far from papal material as you can get.

But that hasn’t stopped the jokes. As one wag put it, ‘The man who’s been indicted multiple times, paid hush money, and spreads hate daily wants to be Pope. Now he wants to be the next pope, and God help us.’

You might be wondering why this story is making waves here in Australia.

Well, it’s a reminder that in the age of social media, no comment—no matter how outlandish—goes unnoticed.

It also shows how public figures can use humour (or at least attempts at it) to deflect tough questions and keep themselves in the spotlight.

For our members, it’s a good chuckle and a chance to reflect on the sometimes bizarre intersection of politics, religion, and celebrity culture.

And let’s be honest—after the last few years, we could all use a laugh!

Out of respect for the Pope, attendees were asked to wear appropriate attire, including a black tie, at his funeral. Trump showed his regard for the Pope by wearing a blue suit and a light blue tie, which basically says it all about a narcissistic, power-crazy, bully. Not content with decimating and dividing the U.S., he and his family are profiting handsomely from the cryptocurrency investments owned by Trump-affiliated entities making a conservative estimate of least $300 million since January, in trading fees alone, on sales of his meme coin and other digital currency, according to crypto experts. (at the same time disbanding a unit dedicated to cryptocurrency enforcement).
It is unbelievable that Americans accept him as their leader.
And the GOP have budgeted $300 million to fund his golf trips.

Well in view of the fact he doesn't take a salary...he has to make money somehow!

That image of him dressed up as the Pope was so degrading and showed a total lack of respect. Trump is so childish and needs to grow up.
I find it refreshing that a man in his position has humour and the ability to laugh at himself...more of us would be healthier if we did as well!

Trump would know Pope Frances past history and that is probably why he believes that there would be no reason why he wouldn't fit in with past histories in comparison
Maybe!?

With this he has gone too far.

It may have been funny if he did it down the track but with so many in mourning and it was only last week Trump was at The Pope's funeral it was way to soon and very disrespectful.

Many will be asking why did Trump actually attend the funeral when he had no respect for The Pope

As for wearing the dark blue suit I see nothing wrong with it. At least it was dark, lucky he never wore a white suit.

Disgusting from a criminal president with the brain of a dead goldfish. He's like a bloody child trying to be clever and show off. What other adult would post something so childish. No wonder all the world leaders thinks he's unhinged. Totally disrespectful and a useless git. Brainless and should be put away somewhere in a straitjacket.

I could not have said it better JenH23

This man is beyond moronic with his despicable, disrespectful behaviour. I saw the photo he posted of himself as Pope. The Pope was only buried last week and Trump in his infantile mind thinks this is something to laugh about. I personally am not religious but his behaviour and actions speak of a person so ignorant it is hard to believe he stands as head of his country on the world stge. How embarrassing for the US.

He is a law unto himself, as the saying goes. He does not respect others, shows no compassion. It's always about him as the bottom line. How on earth does he think he could when he lacks compassion, belittles etc etc. And he's a leader that some worship. I could go on.....

Yeah? It's unbelievable how Australians accept Albosleazy as their president!

I honestly don’t think this was done as a joke NO it was put on to see how many reactions from Trump supporters there would be . If they got such a great response like they worshipped him in the election campaign like he was Jesus Christ himself , I think he would have tried to take over the church . Example like he was going to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine in ONE day… Take over Greenland …make Canada their? State … Take over Gaza Stip and make it into ?? As on can see that is what he wants to be to the world . I haved ticked LIKE on the comments made this morning ,one especially made by member Jim Bowling

There is no statement or proof that Trump did not have respect for the Pope, on the contrary, he was one of the few (if any) who strongly supported Israel, as does Trump.
I personally have found him to be the most grounded, like-minded, empathetic and understanding of all Popes that have ruled in my lifetime.
The general negativity against him was from anti-religious groups. MHDSRIP. 🌹
