Tributes pour for renowned South Australian statesman Steele Hall as he passes away at 95

Australia has lost one of its distinguished statesmen, marking the end of an era for a prominent political figure whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the nation's history.

His enduring legacy, characterised by significant reforms and steadfast leadership, continues to resonate within the Australian political landscape.

His life and achievements as a remarkable individual who dedicated his life to public service shaped South Australia's future and the nation at large.

Steele Hall, a man whose career spanned several decades and whose influence touched many aspects of public life, passed away at the age of 95.

Mr Hall's death marks the end of an era for South Australian politics.

He served as the 36th premier for one term from 1968 to 1970 and later made his mark in both houses of federal parliament—from 1974 to 1977 in the Senate and from 1981 to 1996 as the federal member for Boothby.

Premier Peter Malinauskas's offer of a state funeral is a fitting tribute to a man who put the welfare of his state above partisan politics.

‘Hall is rightly seen as a significant figure in the history of South Australian politics,’ he stated.

‘He leaves behind a reputation for integrity and political courage, a man who truly put his state ahead of party political interests.’

‘On behalf of the State Government, I wish to pass on my condolences to Steele’s wife Joan, his six children, six grandchildren, and his family and friends,’ Premier Malinauskas added.

Deputy Opposition Leader John Gardner described Hall as a towering figure in South Australian politics, noting that he left behind a legacy defined by ‘great courage and deep principle’.

‘His term was marked by far-sighted achievement and constitutional reform, including modernisation of electoral laws which were necessary for the state’s future, even though they damaged his own chances of re-election,’ he explained.

‘His term in office saw significant progress in other areas including women’s health, Aboriginal affairs, and the fluoridation of South Australia’s water supply—a measure controversial at the time but which has led to significant dental health improvements for generations of South Australians.’

Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Birmingham referred to Hall as a ‘legend of South Australian politics’.

‘I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have spent valuable time with Steele in my most formative political years, from work experience in his electorate office as a teenager to many discussions with Joan and Steele in their family home,’ he shared.

‘To see Steele speak to an audience was a display of persuasive force, deep insight and the wisdom that came from so many years of political discourse.’

‘I extend my love and condolences to Joan, along with Steele’s children, grandchildren and all those who loved and respected him,’ Minister Birmingham continued.

Steele Hall's journey from the family wheat and sheep farm in Balaklava—where he was born in 1928—to the corridors of power is a testament to his determination and skill.

His preselection for the seat of Gouger and subsequent election to state parliament in 1959 marked the beginning of a storied career.

As a member of the Playford government and later succeeding Sir Thomas as the leader of the LCL in 1966, he was instrumental in returning the Liberals to government in 1968.

Hall is survived by his wife Joan, his six children, and six grandchildren, who, along with his many friends and admirers, mourn the loss of a legendary figure.
