Tragedy strikes suburb: A retired teacher's life taken in a violent shopping centre attack

In a shocking incident that has left a community in mourning, a retired teacher was brutally stabbed to death in front of her six-year-old granddaughter at a shopping centre in southwest Brisbane.

The victim, identified as 70-year-old Vyleen White, was a beloved figure known for her kindness and dedication to helping those in need.

On a seemingly ordinary Saturday evening, around 6:10 pm, emergency services were called to the Town Square Redbank Plains Shopping Centre.

They arrived to find a horrifying scene: Vyleen White lying in the centre's underground carpark with life-threatening injuries.

Despite their best efforts, she tragically succumbed to her wounds and passed away at the scene.

The incident unfolded in front of White's six-year-old granddaughter, who was left unharmed but deeply traumatised.

In a heartbreaking revelation, White's daughter, Danice, shared her father's haunting final words to her mother.

He had suggested that White go to a different shopping centre that day.

'Dad says “Why don’t you go to Redbank plaza?”, if only she listened that day, it would have not been her,' Danice told the media.

Danice was waiting at her mother's home, anticipating an afternoon of Bible study together, when she received the devastating news.

'I'm struggling to control my thoughts right now,' she confessed.

Vyleen White was more than just a retired teacher; she was a pillar of her community, a woman who cared deeply for others.

She regularly prayed for and helped the homeless and was known for her compassionate nature. Her untimely death has left her family and community reeling, especially as she was about to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary.

White was also a devoted partner, helping her long-time husband navigate the world after he fell blind. Her loss has left a void that will be hard to fill.

In the wake of this tragedy, Danice has called for increased police presence in shopping centres. She doesn't want 'anyone else to ever go through this again'.

Queensland Police Service Detective Acting Superintendent Heath McQueen described the incident as 'very harrowing' and assured that all available resources were being applied to the investigation.

The attacker, who is believed to have stolen a car shortly after the incident, has not been identified. However, a 15-year-old boy has been arrested amid the ongoing investigations. The police said the individual reached Ipswich Police Station at 9:30 pm on Sunday evening.

Well they seem to like violence for violence sake with no regard for human life. They should not be in our society. This was a 70 y/o woman with her 6 y/o grandchild and there were approx 5 of them - I can't say what I really think of them actually.

Wonder how these African criminals were allowed in this country ! They work as a team and have not a caring bone in their body . What punishment do they get ? As I have stated many times before , we should have a look what they do with these criminals in Singapore. Friday is hanging day and that what would happen to these young criminals . Singapore was in early days a dirty and crime country like most of the other Asian countries around them . But they cleaned up their act and it is safe to walk around at night and also very clean . What is happening to Australia ? There need to be tough rules and regulations , no ifs or buts . For now these thugs should be sent to where they came from , underage or not .
Remember what happened a long time ago to this young boy - James I think his name was - in the UK . He was taken away from a shopping mall by two young boys , who killed him .After their jail time they were sent to Australia and were given an other name .
Also Redbank Plaza is not a very nice area , I’m glad I live far away from that whole area .

I sincerely hope these so called thugs are tried as adults, one committed murder, the others were all accomplices. They need to spend the rest of their lives in gaol. Or be deported with or without their parents and never allowed back into Australia. Hopefully they will not be allowed to plead any sort of mental issues. It is time mandatory life sentences were given to anyone who murders another person, whether premeditated or not, regardless of age, ethnic background, claimed mental health issues or any other reasons they concoct as to why they did it. Even if they confess or plead guilty they should be locked up for life. They should have only basic necessities provided, no extras like pay tv, phones etc etc. they should be placed in solitary confinement regularly as part of their punishment. the punishment needs to be harsh enough to be a deterrent to all the low life’s who commit these crimes. Judges need to grow some and start applying these sentences even if the governments are too scared to do it. The other option would be to hand these thugs over to the families of the victim and let them give them the biggest flogging they could without killing them, and then throw them in gaol for life. Governments and judges need to hang their heads in shame that they have allowed society to be taken over by these thugs because of the lenient treatment and sentences they get for the crimes they commit. Now another family is grieving and a six year old child has been traumatised for life because of the inaction of governments and judges.
No.... it will be swept under the carpet in case 'WE OFFEND'

Ah Capital Punishment - in a more humane society, not many would like that job - you sound like the right person for the job however.

James Bolger was murdered by Jon Venables and someone else in the UK. Nathaniel Brazil shot and killed his schoolteacher by shooting him point blank in Florida (?). All three were under the age of 16! Why the names of underage serious offenders are withheld in this country is ridiculous!

If we offend who?
I think he means that it may be considered racism if the perpetrators are given the maximum penalty, or in this case, any penalty at all. One of these sub humans are out on bail!

Who gives a rat's if you came from a "war torn" country? Trouble is you decided not to make a "new" life in the country you settled in, but drag the shit from wherever you came from, with you. Violence, hatred, extreme views, etc, and they think WE AUSTRALIANS should tolerate it. And when they ask for leniency in a penalty for committing a serious crime, for piss poor reasons like "I was traumatised during the civil war because my dog trod on a land mine", some "psychologist" states that they suffering severe PTSD or other concocted mental affliction. Trouble is, a psychologist is not qualified to make a formal diagnosis on anything. All they do is form opinions which are never wrong but usually based on misinformation or misinterpretation.

There is an underlying industry of pseudo mental health "professionals" out there who get off people for serious crimes with little or no penalty and for what reason? What ever story they make up together forms a part of a manufactured defence. Or "I can't speak English" when you have been here for over ten years.

I could go on and on but I won't bore you any further.

Thanks Veggiepatch, I didn't get that context. I certainly hope that is not the case in this matter. The one who did the murder can be tried as an adult I think, due to the serious nature of the crime and I sincerely hope that is applied. On the age factor, I hope that do a bone density or whatever test determines age as I question if they are as young as stated and probably birth certs are questionable. Perhaps the one that gave himself up to police might be the one out on bail. Personally, I would not waste a cent on them save for the plane fare to send them back. We do have enough of our own to worry about. This will be a test for this government.

This is an extreme nasty comment , the crime is getting worse and it seems to be that we better get used to it ! NO WAY1
What would be your answer to stop this terrible crime? What about if it was your family who was killed in front of a 6 yr old?
Surely you would think something drastic needs to happen !

People killing people is nasty! Suggestion of making Australia like Singapore is outrageous - hanging Friday FFS! We have a legal system, while not perfect, is by far better than hanging people. Of course I am outraged by the crime - but imposing death penalty is just as barbaric. Reason by way of emotions is not reasonable.

Still , you obviously have no answer , only that we have a legal system here in AU , but this is failing
Yes , they do hanging people in Singapore , but not every Friday and not for stealing a bread or anything small crime ,they are not going out to find people for this .
If the rules would be a lot stricter , maybe the offenders would think twice . These thugs are just going out and hurt or kill people if they not getting their way.

A few thousand hectares in the middle of the Simpson Desert, surrounded by a complex system of security fencing, ALA correctional centres, would suit any migrant, refugee (legal or not) who commits ANY but the most minor crime in the country would serve as a source of penalty. Include the offspring of these barbarians.

No food, no water, no shelter, just fend for yourself. Seem a bit harsh? Ask the same question to Vyleen White's family. And the family of the girl who raped by the Skaf brother clan to name two of thousands. The two victims of these crimes DID NOT choose their fate. The perpetrators made a decision to commit the crime. You can't argue against that!
