Tradesman warns of poorly built apartments: 'This is what you get these days'

Whether you're starting over or just looking for a change of scenery, buying a home is one of the most significant choices you'll ever make in your life.
For many of us, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so we're ready to put in a lot of effort and spend a lot of money to make it a reality.
You want the house you buy to stand the test of time, so it's imperative to check and see that it was constructed with high-quality materials and built by skilled craftsmen.
That's why this tradesman was so angry in one of his recent TikTok uploads, in which he criticised the state of the brand-new but grossly substandard city apartments he said were milking money from unsuspecting renters and buyers.

The tiler can be seen providing a tour of what he dubbed the 'worst' apartments in Sydney, which has since accumulated over 820,000 views in only a few days.
Poor construction around the elevator and crooked doors in the corridor set the tone for an unpleasant visit before even entering the unit.
The video showed a supposedly finished bathroom, but it later revealed that the shower stall was not yet sealed, and the grout between the tiles was missing.
The apartment's exact location in Sydney is unknown, and the tiler did not disclose the address.
The tiler also showed the buttons on the toilet in the second bathroom and pointed out the huge, uneven space between the buttons and the tiles they were supposed to rest on.
'Look at the workmanship – it's just f**king garbage,' he sighed in frustration. After that, he focused on several shaky doors that had uneven spots of paint all over them.
'Everywhere you go, it's like a kid did it,' he said. 'This is what you get these days in Sydney.'
The tiler said there was a problem with the way things are done in the construction industry, and he said that several other recently constructed homes and apartments in the city were just as poorly built as this one.
'They're taking people's money and building it s**t. If people want to build an apartment and take people's money, there should be some security.'

According to David Roberts, president of the Australian Society of Building Consultants, it is now more difficult for builders and developers to pass off subpar class two (apartment) constructions since the NSW Government's Design and Building Practitioners Act went into effect earlier this year.
The Act aimed to reestablish customer confidence in apartment construction by implementing a variety of guidelines to ensure that they were constructed to the highest standards.
'The building commissioner's office is getting stuck into these dodgy builders and developers that have been wreaking havoc for years,' Mr Roberts told news.com.au.
'There is a multitude of buildings that need to be fixed or are still having issues from prior to July last year when the practitioners act came into play.'
Mr Roberts claimed the problem stemmed from a lack of oversight of subcontractors.
'There's a foreman on site some of the time, but the rest of the time, subbies are just doing their own thing,' he said.

Here are some important things to keep in mind if you or someone you know is planning to buy or rent an apartment:
Get a building inspection
The first mistake many people make is assuming that a professional building inspection is unnecessary if the property is brand new.
The opposite is actually true—there is a higher chance of flaws in a newer building because, in an older one, many of the problems may have been fixed already.
Acquire a strata report
Next, get your hands on a strata report. By doing so, you can learn about any maintenance that has been done in the past, is now being done, is scheduled, or is required.
You can either personally view these files, or request a copy from a professional strata inspection firm. Also, find out what the regular strata fees are and if there are any extra 'special levies' for larger repairs or works.
Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions
Since you'll be spending a considerable amount of money, you must get all of your questions about the property answered before making a final decision.
Some valid questions are:
So there you have it, members! It appears that more and more apartments and houses are being constructed without regard for quality these days, so please be cautious if you're considering buying one! We hope that you find these tips helpful.
