Amid the cost of living crisis, gas prices should be the least concern of vehicle owners who have invested in a hybrid car.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Toyota Australia has issued a recall for more than 200 of its hybrid vehicles, citing concerns that they may be consuming more fuel than initially advertised.
This recall, which affects the Yaris Cross GR Sport Hybrid SUVs sold between October 2022 and April 2023, comes hot on the heels of a High Court ruling that cleared Mitsubishi of similar allegations.
It also comes after the Australian Automobile Association tested real-world petrol and diesel consumption of vehicles.
The program was done as part of a $14 million initiative funded by the federal government.
The initial results, which were released in November, showed that more than half of the nine vehicles tested used more fuel than lab tests indicated.
This issue will see Toyota replacing the tyres on 245 Yaris Cross GR Sport Hybrid SUVs.
The Department of Transport issued the recall after the manufacturer identified the issue.
According to them, these vehicles were reportedly equipped with tyres that did not correctly align with the Australian Design Rules (ADR) certification requirements.
The department reiterated that the recall was not due to safety risks but rather the failure to meet Australian regulations.
'The tyres fitted to vehicles within this production range do not meet the Australian Design Rule 81/02 requirements and may result in increased fuel consumption than [what was] indicated on the fuel consumption label,' the recall notice stated.
Toyota Australia assured customers that the company will replace the tyres on the affected vehicles free of charge.
The company will also be reaching out to owners via phone, email, or post to arrange for the tyre replacement.
'Tyre replacement will take approximately two hours, however, depending on the dealer's work schedule, owners may be required to make the vehicle available for a longer period of time,' the company noted.
Owners of Yaris Cross GR Sport Hybrid SUVs who purchased their vehicles within the specified time period are urged to contact their local Toyota dealer to arrange for the tyre replacement.
The fuel consumption of the Yaris Cross GR Sport Hybrid SUV is currently estimated at 3.8 litres for every 100 kilometres.
However, this recall suggests that the actual fuel consumption may be higher due to the tyres not meeting the Australian Design Rule 81/02 requirements.
