Too Good To Go App Review – I Saved $30 on Groceries… But There’s a Catch

If you’re an SDC Rewards member, you already know how much I love a good bargain/freebie. So, naturally, when I heard about an app offering heavily discounted food, my interest was piqued.

Now that I’ve finally tried the Too Good To Go app, I wanted to share my experience with you all. Not sure what I’m talking about? Too Good To Go promises to save food from the bin and save you a few bucks at the same time. It’s a bit of a lucky dip… but that’s half the fun.

What I ordered:
I picked up two surprise bags from QE Food Stores in Sydney:
  • One Mixed Surprise Bag for $9.99
  • One Fruit & Veg Surprise Bag for $4.99
All up, I spent just under 15 bucks — and according to the app, I saved around $30 worth of food and prevented the same CO2 emissions as brewing 20 cups of coffee. Not bad for an afternoon errand.

What I actually got:
Here’s the good, the bad, and the slightly overripe:

The Mixed Bag ($9.99):
I got:
  • Packaged lettuce (in surprisingly good shape)
  • A pre-made salad bowl (use-by that day)
  • A tub of tabbouleh (use-by next day)
  • 400g of beef meatballs (use-by next day)
  • A tub of pre-cut pineapple (use by that day)

Here’s where it becomes a bit of a mixed bag (literally and figuratively):
  • A bunch of bananas (very spotty, on their last legs)
  • A completely overripe, mushy plum
  • 3 bruised apples

The Fruit & Veg Bag ($4.99):

I got:
  • Another bunch of bananas (even spottier, on their last legs)
  • A punnet of cherry tomatoes (only a few were mouldy), along with a squishy lone tomato
  • A leek
  • One very sad capsicum
  • Two slightly squished nectarines
  • A chunk of garlic
  • And a lime
