Who remembers throwing streamers from cruise ships? Back then, you see family and friends off with colourful ribbons fluttering in the breeze. It made farewells festive and heartfelt. Do you have fond memories of those moments?

Remember them really well. Especially when a cousin of mine & his wife were off to Old England Town on either the "Oronsay or the "Orsova" in the 50's. They threw quite a few of the streamers down to us on the wharf. You just hoped that they didn't break which a lot did. Just another tradition which has departed our way of life.

Missed the 'Oriana' due to train breaking down and finally sailed on 'The Fairsky' November 1969 Everybody threw streamers and we all waved wildly even though we had no-one out there. We got friendly with the people in the next cabin and took it in turns to watch all our children while we played cards.Crossing 'The Bay of Biscay' was really bad .The top deck was shut off nearly all the staff were sick as we were but not my husband he went for his meals as usual. After two days it got better and we slowly reached South Africa.Engineers arrived and tried to fix the ship and we did a trial run but broke down again and ended in Johannesburg.Engineers were called in from England and from then on had a perfect sailing.

Someone threw what was expected to be a streamer as we were leaving port for a trip to UK on the beautiful Dutch ship Willem Rhys but it was a solid calculating roll and it hit me on the forehead and I ended up in the hospital ward on board with everyone speaking Dutch.
