Three dinners, three lunches, under $35 – here's how!

Did you know that money spent on food is one of the largest amongst the expenses of an average Aussie household? Even the thriftiest and most frugal people you know still spend hundreds of dollars per month just to get by.

We at the SDC understand how expenses can get so expensive – that is why we're always looking for ways to save money, not just on groceries but on daily expenses as well.

Here, we're sharing with you members a tip (and a simple meal plan) to save money on food expenses.

Time to get frugal, then!

Just like any of us, 28-year-old Olivia from Melbourne was looking for ways to cut down her grocery bill, especially now that inflation is causing the price of food and goods to rise in Australia.

So, she came up with a very simple meal plan that she happily shared with her followers on her TikTok account The Motivated Millennial. In the now-viral video clip, she revealed that she managed to come up with six full meals for under $35 by simply shopping at Aldi.

"This week, I set the challenge to get three dinners and three lunches for under $35 just by shopping at Aldi and whatever was in our pantry," she said in the video.

Olivia managed to successfully pull off the task by spending only $32 in total for her groceries, which included some pasta packets, carrots, stir fry sauce, chicken breast, some cup noodles, and a bottle of olive oil (the most expensive item she bought).

What a bargain hunter!

As for her meal plans, she made beef pasta, chicken stir fry, and chicken tacos for dinner. As for lunch, she had instant hot noodle cups and dinner leftovers since she was living alone and the servings were more than enough for her.

For just for $32, she took care of her dinners and lunches for three days!

While we understand that the meals were relatively simple and not at all fancy or gourmet, we think that this method works best for people who are really looking to save and wouldn't mind simple dishes to fill them up.

In the video's comment section, Olivia gave more tips to her followers on how to reduce their grocery bills:
  • Pick the cheaper vegetables to use in meals
  • Pasta and rice can go a long way and make extras for lunch leftovers
  • Check your pantry before going to the supermarket
  • Make meals with what you already have

We hope Olivia's tips and simple meal menu plan are helpful to you, members! Do you have more frugal grocery tips to share with us? Let us know in the comments below!

These meals are just fine, if you are fit and reasonably healthy, but if you have any food allergies, like, diabetic, celiac etc. not very nutritious, you would have to pay 3 times as much for the pasta to be of lentils or other. No one solution fits all.

You didn't include meat which is extremely expensive. So you can't live on just rice, pastas, and vegies. I understand her being able to buy cheaper in Aldi as i find them exceptionally Cheap.

I'm like a lot of people out there I cant have pasta wheat rice but i do use collie rice when the collies are cheap and make up a hole head then freeze it and I do grow my own veg which cuts the cost a lot and then I check what is on special and just buy that for the week and I use my freezer a lot that is a big saving you can freeze most thing I slice lemons when they are cheap in winter and then use them in the summer as ice for my drink that is just one of the thing I do make a large pot of soup then freeze into meal size they can be used for lunch of dinner you can manage if you have to

All fine, but no staples ie. fruit, milk, bread etc. These savings aren't a true reflection on the weekly grocery bill imo.
