Thousands of families to benefit from a $400 boost from local government

In a world where the cost of living keeps rising, it's refreshing to hear about initiatives that could ease the financial burden on families.

For families in this state, this relief comes in the form of a once-off payment designed to help with the expenses associated with schooling.

Starting today, thousands of Victorian families could see their bank accounts a little healthier, thanks to the Victorian government's School Saving Bonus.

This $400 bonus showcased the government's commitment to supporting education and reducing back-to-school expenses for families.

The bonus could be a proactive step to ensure that every child has access to quality education without financial constraints.

Families do not have to go through an application process to qualify for the bonus, as the payment is 'free, automatic and universal'.

The bonus is available to parents and carers of Victorian government school students from Prep to Year 12 in 2025, with the exception of full-fee international students, home-schooled students, and TAFE students.

Additionally, families with children at non-government schools will be eligible for the payment if they qualify for the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund.

Premier Jacinta Allan emphasised that the government understands families' desires to provide the best for their children.

These investments often include quality education, suitable textbooks, fresh uniforms, and enriching experiences such as camps and excursions.

'It's why our School Saving Bonus is helping give kids a great start to the school year and their parents one less thing to worry about,' Premier Allan shared.

Education Minister Ben Carroll acknowledged the parents' desire to give their children the essentials and the best experiences while in school.

'We're making life a little bit easier for families by providing a $400 once-off payment from today so that families can begin planning and budgeting for the 2025 school year,' Minister Carroll stated.

The Department of Education should be sending out emails to families about the payment within the week.

The bonus also applies per child, so a family with three school-aged children could receive a total of $1,200 to help cover school costs.

Families can choose how they spend the bonus.

It may go towards uniform and textbook vouchers or into their school accounts for camps, excursions, and extracurricular activities.

Uniform and textbook vouchers could be redeemed at local school-approved suppliers, while funds allocated to school activities would be credited directly to the family's school account.

The School Saving Bonus was a testament to the government's recognition of the financial challenges Australian families face and their commitment to education.

It's a move that both supports every family's needs and invests in the future of the community.
