Thoughts on Being a Senior Citizen

Senior citizens are constantly criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we take, responsibility for all we have done and do not try to blame others.

HOWEVER, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT senior citizens who took:

The melody out of music,

The pride out of appearance,

The courtesy out of driving,

The romance out of love,

The commitment out of marriage,

The responsibility out of parenthood,

The togetherness out of the family,

The learning out of education

The Golden Rule from rulers,

The nativity scene out of cities,

The civility out of behaviour,

The refinement out of language,

The dedication out of employment,

The prudence out of spending,

The ambition out of achievement.

And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from personal relationships and interactions with others!

And, we DO understand the meaning of Patriotism, and remember those who have fought and died for our country.

YES, I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN!

I'm the life of the party.....Even if it lasts until 8 p.m.

I'm very good at opening childproof caps.....With a hammer.

I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up

I'm smiling all the time,

Because I can't hear a thing you're saying.

I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe, secure place, somewhere.

I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg.

I'm beginning to realize that ageing is not for wimps.

Yes, I'm a SENIOR CITIZEN, and I think I am having the time of my life!

You are a gem! Absolute truth. This should be published in every newspaper in Australia and broadcast by every radio station.
Why have we allowed things to deteriorate so much?
I yearn for Choirs in shops at Xmas time. I long for handwritten letters and cards. Oh well, the penalty for living too long I suppose.
Zoe.

'If' these truthful statements could be taken up by the TV and Newspapers, and also in maybe paid 'ad's' I wonder if this would have an impact on people? In an ideal world and in our old fashioned way, yes I would love to think so. What wise words Vinylted how about you sending this to the Media?

Love it. I agree. People just want to shift the blame and the seniors are the candidate of choice. I think a lot of people are surprised when we fight back. Go Seniors.

Really, in my experience Seniors are guilty of a lot of those things. But it's nice to dream that we all are nearly perfect lol

The melody out of music,
Every generation seems to feel the need to rebel by listening to different music. Our parents didn't like our music, and our grandparents didn't like our parents'.

The pride out of appearance,
ha ha nobody spends more time in front of a camera than today's kids. They absolutely care about the way they look. And don't deny it, our generation was always getting into trouble for our "scruffy" jeans and t-shirts look (that was my uniform!) and there was always that whole controversy of some kid getting suspended from school because his hair was too long.

The courtesy out of driving,
Don't deny it, we've all felt frustrated about some old fogey on the road in front of us. P plates are on cars as a warning of inexperience. And I'll own up and say I was sometimes a jerk when I was young and stupid behind the wheel.

The romance out of love,
Really? You want to take love away from young people? You are denying their true emotions? I just think this is wrong. Love is love.

The commitment out of marriage,
Well, my parents are divorced. I'll agree that certainly those stupid "let's get married before we even know each other's surnames" tv shows cheapen the institution, as do celebrities and influencers who get married and then divorced after 5 minutes. But, um, how many times did King Henry VIII get married? I was delighted to vote yes for friends in same-sex relationships who wanted to get married. As for me, I've been living with the same man for 42 years and we didn't get married.

The responsibility out of parenthood,
Who taught them this? Uh, was it their parents?

The togetherness out of the family,
Is this because both parents now have to work in order to give the kids a reasonable life? I can't imagine anybody starting family life with the intention of not being part of it.

The learning out of education
This isn't the fault of kids, this is a policy that's come down through governments, and who voted those governments into power? Us. The boomers. We're responsible for that bad decision.

The Golden Rule from rulers,
I don't even know what this is supposed to mean. If it means we have rubbish politicians, then, again, we know who to blame for it – the boomers are an enormous political strength. Or weakness.

The nativity scene out of cities,
Well, good? I mean, put one in front of your church, that's nice for you, but personally I'd sooner see a great big Santa with reindeer.

The civility out of behaviour,
Generally, you get what you give. Be polite, get polite.

The refinement out of language,
Language is dynamic. It changes with society. If you're missing the nuance, maybe you need to listen more.

The dedication out of employment,
I don't know why anyone would feel dedicated to a job where they're treated like a disposable part. Again, this is on the employers.

The prudence out of spending,
Um, I think credit cards have been around since about the 1950s.

The ambition out of achievement.
Maybe? I don't know.

What I'm saying here is just because things are different, and that you might not understand how they work, it doesn't mean they are worse. Don't put the kids down. They are doing their best, and we're the ones who brought them up with these values.

All well noted apart from the fact that I am well and truly pre boomer..... maybe that was part of the problem... but as with all these lists, they are generalizations, like modern clothing... one size firs all! LOL
