This traveller booked a 'room with a view' but you won't believe what she found when she got there...

We here at the SDC are always on the lookout for a good deal – especially when it comes to travel accommodation.

So, we can certainly sympathise with one young woman from Wellington, New Zealand, who thought she hit the jackpot when she found a budget hotel boasting scenic views at an affordable price.

Unfortunately, Miriam's high hopes were quickly dashed when she arrived at her room at the Mi-Pad Hotel in Queenstown to find that the supposed view was actually a live TV stream from a camera on the roof!

She shared the hilarious mix-up on Twitter, drawing in dozens of amused responses and said she 'had to laugh' at the 'view' but wasn't bothered because of how affordable her room was.

'We booked a room with a view in Queenstown, and it was a LIVESTREAM of the view from the top floor,' Miriam wrote in the tweet with some laughing emojis.

A Kiwi traveller was left shocked when she arrived at her room to find that the supposed view was actually a live TV stream from a camera on the roof!

It was noted that each room at the budget hotel has access to a remote-controlled livestream camera, which provides views of the surrounding landscape, including the lake, neighbouring mountains, and the city, that can be seen from the shared rooftop terrace.

The Kiwi added that her friend and travel companion had booked the room because of the advertised 'mountain view, lake view, city view' on the listing.

According to the Mi-Pad website, some of the Queen Deluxe rooms have view options for the scenic Remarkables Mountain or picturesque Lake Wakatipu’.

Miriam mentioned on the social media thread that there was indeed a view from the back road, so she thought it was ‘fair play’ to describe their room that way.

Many online users found Miriam's story amusing, with many expressing that they were able to see the humour in the situation.

One comment said: ‘That is next level. Literally.’

‘At least it wasn't a bad watercolour of Mt Cook,’ joked another.

However, some were outraged by the hotel's 'cheeky' description.

‘That's a good case for “I want my money back!” one user commented.

But Miriam responded that she wasn't bothered at all and said she hardly spent any time in the room as she went sightseeing across Queenstown.

'I think there was a super deluxe room which must have been the proper view! We have a window with a boring view too. I had to laugh, and it was cheap,' she replied.

We can see the funny side of this story, but we can also understand how some people might feel misled by the hotel's description.

So always make sure to check the reviews and do your research before booking a room with a view!

Here are some tips on how to ensure you're getting exactly what you paid for when booking accommodation:
  • Check reviews on multiple sites to get a balanced opinion
  • Google Map the location to see what the surrounding area looks like
  • Check to see if the property has its website and, if so, what photos and descriptions are used
  • Ask specific questions about the room and view when you book, so there are no surprises when you arrive.

A live view with a remote control is a bit like cruising where one channel on the t.v. is dedicated to a live view of the ocean from a camera mounted somewhere on the ship's stern.

We once had a room with a view, part of a package deal. The hotel room with a double hung window was directly opposite a similar sized window of a building approximately 120 cm from ours. Both the other patron & ourselves needed to have the window open for air circulation.

We had a two night stop-over in Hong Kong and I paid for a room with a window. Yes it did indeed have a window. We were on the 5th floor and our window showed us the blank concrete wall of the building next door. The window didn't open or we could have put out a hand and touched the 'view'.
