This one bathroom habit could be disastrous for your health, and doctors are urging you to stop immediately!

As we age, our skin becomes more delicate, and the routines we've followed for years might suddenly become problematic. This is particularly true when it comes to personal hygiene habits, such as how we take care of ourselves after using the bathroom. While we've all been taught the basics, like wiping from front to back, there's one bathroom habit that has doctors particularly concerned: the use of wet wipes.

Here at the Seniors Discount Club, we understand the importance of staying informed about health and wellness, especially as it pertains to the over-60s community. So, let's dive into why this seemingly harmless product could be causing more harm than good.

Wet wipes, often marketed as a convenient and superior cleaning option, are not always the friendliest choice for our sensitive areas. Dr Alex Elias, a board-certified colorectal surgeon, warns that wet wipes can lead to perianal dermatitis, an uncomfortable rash around the anus. The culprits? Ingredients and preservatives in the wipes, disruption of good bacteria, and the moisture they leave behind.

For those with conditions like hemorrhoids or anal fissures, or simply sensitive skin, the situation can be exacerbated. Dr Maysaa El Zoghbi, a gastroenterologist, points out that the materials in some wet wipes may be too abrasive, causing further irritation.

Dr Ari Lamet, another gastroenterologist, adds that the alcohol or fragrances in wet wipes can irritate the perianal area. Moreover, the excess moisture, if not dried properly, can foster bacterial or fungal growth, leading to additional discomfort.

It's not just our skin that suffers. The environment takes a hit, too. Wet wipes are notorious for clogging sewer systems and are slow to break down, causing significant environmental damage. Dr Carlton Thomas emphasises the importance of being mindful of the ingredients in wet wipes, advising to look out for parabens, phthalates, phenoxyethanol, and cocamidopropyl betaine.

So, what's the alternative? Doctors recommend going back to basics with toilet paper and considering the use of a bidet. Bidets, which have been popular in Europe for years, are gaining traction in the United States and Australia. They offer a gentle and effective way to clean without the risks associated with wet wipes. Brands like Tushy and RinseWorks provide easy-to-install options for home use, or you can opt for a squeeze bottle for a more budget-friendly solution.

Unscented toilet paper is another good choice, as suggested by Dr Lamet. The key is to wipe gently from front to back until the paper is clean without scrubbing the sensitive perianal area. It's also wise to monitor the colour and consistency of your stools, as these can be indicators of your overall health.

If you experience any bleeding or irritation while wiping, it's crucial to consult with your physician. These symptoms could be signs of an underlying issue, and your doctor can help determine the best personal hygiene method for your needs.
