This mum's $10 upcycling project looks just like a designer item - Is this the cheapest way to get luxurious furniture?

We've all been there before. You're out furniture shopping and you see the most beautiful piece of furniture ever. But then you look at the price tag and your heart sinks. It's way out of your budget.

It's natural to feel disappointed in those moments. But it's important to remember that there are other options out there.

There are plenty of places to find affordable furniture. You can search for second-hand furniture, look for sales, or find furniture stores that specialise in affordable pieces.

Upcycling some used furniture is another fantastic low-cost home improvement idea. Who knows, you might even acquire a beautiful piece that rivals the original more expensive version. That's what one clever woman did recently and the results are amazing!

Sharing her upcycling project on the Kmart Home Decor & Hacks Australia Facebook group, the mum said that she wanted to inspire other group members who are looking to spruce up their homes on a budget.

‘I'm sure there are a lot of these little tables floating around and it might inspire someone to try this upcycle if you like doing that kind of thing,’ she wrote.

The original poster shared that she upcycled some Kmart side tables her son was getting rid of, giving them new life with a fresh coat of paint and some stylish accents.

The mum added: ‘They were nice when they were new and were still in pretty good condition, but I just didn't like the colour and they were definitely a little bit outdated.’

‘I wasn't sure what I could do with them as they were metal and laminate and not your average nice wood-style piece of furniture to makeover.’

After searching for some design inspiration online, she stumbled upon a more expensive $499 Hamptons-style side table.

She admitted that the price point had made her more determined to create a similar look for a fraction of the price. So, she came up with the idea to add cross bars made out of timber moulding, giving the tables a more elevated and polished look.

‘I measured and cut them and glued them in place. A bit of a process but very rewarding,’ the mum remarked.

She also noted that she painted the table with Anko White Chalk Paint and Anko Matte Spray Varnish, all purchased at Kmart, to give the table a posh-looking finish.

And she succeeded, the furniture ended up looking like it came straight out of a high-end furniture store!

The best part about the project? The makeover only cost her around $10 to make!

The post has captured the attention of more than 1,000 group members, with many ‘tagging’ their families and loved ones to share the tip.

One user wrote: ‘Gotta love when a vision works and saves so much money! Well done, looks awesome.’

‘Fantastic job. It looks fabulous now,’ another added.

Some pointed out that the Kmart table is already a good piece of furniture to spruce up your home regardless of whether you upcycle it. Of course, DIY enthusiasts can always experiment to elevate its aesthetic.

One comment read: ‘I have that table and shelves and a small table with a drawer and a work table but I love it the way they are. It goes great in my unit but what you have done is lovely but I like wood tones.’

If you're feeling inspired to try your hand at upcycling, head to your local Kmart and pick up some supplies.

The mum’s DIY project is a great example of how you can use what you have to create something beautiful and unique.

With a little bit of creativity and resourcefulness, you can save yourself a lot of money and end up with a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture!
