This mum spent $800 on a custom birthday cake – you won't believe what was inside!

Everyone loves a good birthday party, and especially at the Seniors Discount Club, we understand the importance of celebrating life's milestones. However, when it comes to parties, sometimes things don't go quite as planned.

This particular story is about an overseas mum named Shay who had hired a party planner to help her organise a grand event for her one-year-old son. Little did she know that things would take a rather unexpected and bizarre turn.

As is the case with many birthday bashes, a cake is almost always the centrepiece. Imagine spending a whopping $800 on a custom-made, five-tiered cake, only to find out that it was entirely made of styrofoam!

That's right, a shocking revelation unfolded during the party when one of the guests attempted to cut into the colourful, music-themed cake featuring intricate models and a miniature replica of her young son.

No doubt the guests were in for quite a surprise when Shay peeled back the red paper icing on the cake's top tier to reveal foam underneath. Naturally, her first reaction was to take to social media to share her horror. Her video quickly went viral, with over 5 million viewers empathising with her plight.

Shay elaborated, 'I paid $800 for a cake and treats for a party of 60, and I got a styrofoam cake instead of a real one. To top it off, 12 treats came, and they were fake too for a one-year-old's party.'

Outraged social media users quickly jumped to criticise the cake baker, but Shay quickly clarified that the baker wasn't the one at fault. In fact, the baker was as unaware and innocent as Shay herself. The true culprit was the party planner.

Talking to the camera, Shay explained her side of the story: 'Let me start off by saying the baker that made that cake—she has not once spoken to me. I did not know who she was, I did not know who baked my cake until the next day.'

'She did what she was asked. It had nothing to do with her. She did not defraud me, she did not make me pay that much for a fake cake, and she had no knowledge of any of this.'

Shay had paid an extravagant $10,000 for the party, which included additional features like a lolly store, a toy store, and other extravagant touches. Unfortunately, apart from the styrofoam cake, most of those planned details did not materialise either.

Apparently, the party planner informed the baker about wanting a faux cake for display purposes only. Unbeknownst to Shay, the planner charged her a double fee for the cake.

Shay concluded, 'The baker had no idea—it was the party planner.'

Key Takeaways

  • A woman paid $800 for a custom birthday cake only to discover it was made out of Styrofoam.
  • The lavish, music-themed cake was supposed to serve 60 guests at her son's first birthday party.
  • The woman clarified that the baker was not at fault but had been asked by the party planner to create a faux cake.
  • Social media users criticised the party planner for 'scamming' the woman and not providing the extravagant party experience that had been promised.

It's such a shame when celebrations go differently than planned because of dishonesty or mischief. That's why we think it's important to do some extra digging and check out reviews when hiring professionals to avoid these unpleasant surprises.

On a brighter note, we really hope Shay and her family were still able to find some joy and laughter despite the unexpected turn of events!

Have any of you experienced something similar? Maybe a celebration that went awry or a delivery that didn't live up to your expectations? We'd love to hear your stories! Please share them with us in the comments section below.

Sheer madness to spend that on a birthday for a one year old who probably had not much idea of what it was all about!!The woman almost deserves what happened - she was stupid!

More money than sense. Even if I was a millionaire, I'd never pay that much for a child's birthday party. It wasn't about the birthday child, it was all about showing off to the adults in attendance. No-one deserves to be ripped off but it's hard to sympathise.

Maybe she will cater herself for the child's second birthday with his more grounded (?) grandma. Some Internet-addicted people pay ridiculous prices to appear well off or fine the misuse the use of real funds for needless over the top decor can also take advantage of the 'cheapest' and usually often to be unethically minded as many are about quick bucks ..flash and they are gone leaving the wake as this one had. Cosh-cutting is an art today. No child party as that is not for really for the child.... a chocolate cake and stick on motifs if wanted, with a candle or more and some( MORE )toys might be enough !!! :+}

Honestly how thoughtless and insensitive to go public whining about her extravagant spending when in the current economic climate the majority of families can't afford to buy a cupcake for their kids birthday let alone waste $800 on a cake and 10 grand for a one year old's party. More money than sense and a complete lack of brains. Feel more sorry for people doing it though and doing witout

Who pays $10,000 for a birthday party and $800 for a cake for a ONE year old??????
We all know that birthday parties for one-year-olds have nothing to do with the baby (it's all for the adults) but clearly, some people need a reality check. More money than sense to begin with.
