This hidden feature on your ceiling fan will change the way you use it forever

If you think you’re equipped with everything you need to know about ceiling fans – surprise, surprise. One little-known feature has taken the internet by storm and here’s why you should check whether or not you’re using it correctly.

Sharing on a well-known Facebook group, a savvy mum revealed that there is a ‘summer’ and ‘winter’ setting on most ceiling fans.

‘PSA: Spring is here and the weather is heating up!’ she wrote on the Mums Who Clean page.

‘Now is a good time to clean the ceiling fans and flick the little switch from “winter” to “summer”.’

Experts explained that the summer setting turns the blades anti-clockwise, which directs the cool breeze downwards.

On the other hand, the winter setting rotates clockwise which pulls the cold air up towards the roof. And given that warm air rises, the winter setting also works by circulating warm air around the room more efficiently.

Many homeowners were blown away (no pun intended) by the hack, admitting they had ‘no idea’ the switch existed.

‘I never knew about this switch. I clean my ceiling fans twice a year and never noticed.’ wrote one.

Another added: ‘Well, they say you learn something new every day… That’s me, done for the day!’

‘What in the hillbillies, there’s a season switch?’ a third said, while a fourth chimed: ‘How did I not know this? Feeling pretty silly right now.’

One more shared: ‘How did you know this? I don’t have any ceiling fans, but I just learned something new in my 32 years.’

Others were quick to check their ceiling fans for the setting.

‘Hands up for those of us who immediately checked for a switch?’ asked one.

‘I literally stood up, walked around the fan, spotted it, and was like “Well, there you go!”.’

A couple said they knew about the feature, but decided to keep it on the ‘summer’ setting all year round, with one saying: ‘Lol, central Queensland here… Mine’s on summer all year round!’

‘Mine stays on summer all year round... Menopause!’ another added.

What are your thoughts about this hidden switch? Do you have a ceiling fan at home? If so, does it have this feature? Let us know in the comments!

yes, I have known about the switch for years but I don't use it

The winter switch works well with my combustion heater. With the fan helping to warm all of my home. Penrith can get a little on the chilly side in winter 🥶

Some fans actually have a cord hanging down in this position which will reverse or reset the fan. Similar to the cord which disengages a garage door l guess, so it can be raised manually.
