This 'fancy' sausage sizzle menu item at a Melbourne school is going viral

We all know that a sausage sizzle is one of the most Aussie things there is. It's practically obligatory at any kind of community event, from school fetes to Sundays at Bunnings.

And while we love a good snag (or two, or three…) wrapped in white bread with some onions and tomato sauce, it seems like one Melbourne high school has decided to take their election day sausage sizzle up a notch – by offering oysters on the menu!

That's right, along with your standard ‘democracy sausages’, local residents could also enjoy some fresh oysters and sparkling wine while voting at Richmond High School's Gleadell Street campus on Saturday.

And if that wasn't posh enough for you, there were plenty of other gourmet options, such as Vietnamese sausage rolls and 'Jamie Oliver' burgers…

Here's a peek at the school's rather prestigious menu. The first one on the list is, of course, the classic democracy sausage and bread, available for $3.50. Not bad, pretty reasonable, actually!

Things started to get more expensive, though, for their breakfast and lunch options.

There is a Brooklyn Egg & Bacon Roll, made with sourdough bread, a free-range egg, smoked bacon, cheese, and avocado, available for $12. The 'Hangover' version, which includes a hash brown, costs an additional $2.

Now, on to the lunch menu, which caused quite a ruckus among locals (and even on the internet!).

The cheapest option is the $9 Quiche, which were available in two flavours, either pumpkin and chive, or spinach and ricotta. There was also the Plain Old Boring Burger, which was described on the menu as a burger for 'wimps' and (apparently) 'right-wing liberals', available for $10.

There are also 11-inch Gourmet Pizzas available for $22 (an additional $5 if you want a glass of beer) and, of course, six-piece Oyster sets starting at $20. The most expensive one cost $42 and came with a glass of the award-winning Duperrey Brut Premiere Cru Champagne.

Naturally, the news of this epic sausage sizzle spread like wildfire on social media, with many people expressing their disbelief at such an extravagant fundraiser. But as it turns out, the purpose of the event was actually to raise money for a good cause.

According to The Age, Richmond High School was aiming to raise $20,000 for a fund which goes towards mental health support and excursions for students who might not be able to access them otherwise.

And judging by the response they received (and those all-important donations), we think it's safe to say they were hopefully successful!
Key Takeaways

  • A Melbourne school is raising funds for a mental health support fund by offering a menu of gourmet food items, including oysters and champagne, at their election day sausage sizzle.
  • The school is aiming to raise $20,000 for the fund, which will go towards supporting students' mental health and providing access to excursions and events.
  • The most expensive item on the menu is $42 for six oysters and a glass of champagne.
We have to say, we're pretty impressed by this school's fundraising efforts. And who knows, maybe this could start a new trend of fancy sausage sizzles at community events around the country!

Sounds great but who wants to hang around while it is being prepared. Not me.

When I go to do the necessary evil (voting) I'm in and out as quickly as possible. I certainly don't see it as a place to go for breakfast or lunch. Good on them though, hopefully not everyone is like me!! :)

It's not for me, either, but there are many folks who like to try new things, and will wait.
I voted early on Saturday morning in Victoria.
The polling booth was at the local primary school. They usually are setting up the sausage sizzle tent and cake stalls and coffee and cold drinks quite early.
Not this year.
I heard a lady say to her husband, " I can't cope without my obligatory voting sausage!"

Surprised they were allowed to get away with this in the Nanny State - multiple Food regulations and laws were broken : OH&S, Food Safety, Food Service, Food Storage, Food Handling, Food Transport, Food Preparation, all being done by UNQUALIFIED persons, in UNCERTIFIED PREMISES. Without Licencing to do any of it.

A very stupid and dangerous move by this place of alleged education.

Small minded haters everywhere. No laws were broken (all the necessary documentaion was submitted and approved). No OHS laws were broken (the necessary insurances were in place). No food safety laws were broken, or food storage, or food safety, or transport, or prepration (we had the necessary Streatrader food stall licence and all laws were followed to the letter). A temporary liquor licence was approved. So before showing your complete ignorance, check your facts next time. You just didn't like my t-shirt. 'A place of alleged education? You should try getting one yourself.
Thanks James for your very even-handed review.
