As you stroll through the supermarket aisles, a familiar sight often catches your eye—the vibrant red packaging of Allen’s lollies, a confectionery staple and beloved treasure for generations.
But this sight is about to change as Nestlé, the guardian of the iconic Allen’s brand, embarks on a revolution for this nostalgic treat to deliver joy and responsibility.
The brand, known for its vibrant packaging and playful characters, is about to undergo a transformation that Nestlé calls the most 'important' in its history.
Allen's, a staple in the confectionery aisle of supermarkets across Australia, is set to receive a makeover that will significantly reduce its environmental impact.
The new packaging will be matte, a departure from the glossy finish many used to. But the change isn't just about aesthetics; it's a move towards sustainability.
Melanie Chen, Nestlé’s Head of Marketing Confectionary, explained the motivation behind the change.
'Allen’s lollies are here to bring smiles to Australians, and we want to keep doing that while reducing our impact on the environment, with a focus on reducing the amount of plastic we have in our packaging,' she said.
‘While Allen’s lolly bags will look and feel different, we believe Aussies will welcome this move towards using less plastic so they can enjoy their Allen’s lollies even more.’
The shift to matte packaging will result in a 21 per cent reduction in plastic production across Allen's entire range.
This equates to a whopping 58 tonnes of plastic that will no longer be produced by Allen's, a significant step towards a more sustainable future.
The new packaging will be seen on popular items such as Allen’s Snakes Alive, Allen’s Party Mix, and Allen’s Killer Pythons.
The beloved characters adorning the front of the packs will also be modernised.
'Allen’s iconic red packaging is well recognised in stores as well as at parties and celebrations at home,' Chen added.
'We’ve given our packs and beloved Allen’s characters a fun refresh as we’ve reduced our use of plastic.'
But fans of Allen's need not worry about the taste of their favourite lollies. Chen reassures that the lollies themselves will remain unchanged.
'Our lollies remain unchanged as we know how important the familiarity and taste of Allen’s is to Australians.'
Nestlé didn’t make this move for the first time.
A few months ago, Nestlé’s KitKat bars had a new look by increasing the amount of recycled plastic to 90 per cent as the company announced its move towards sustainability in 2022.
The beloved chocolate brand is the first food wrapped in a more sustainable soft plastic and the brand with the highest amount of recycled soft plastic used in a confectionary wrapper compared to other major food brands. You can read more about this story here.
