This unexpected union of freedom and security that the Age Pension offers is perhaps why so many regard it as an invaluable asset. Let's delve deeper into this.

Being eligible for and receiving a full or part Age Pension in Australia doesn't just symbolise an extra bit of cash added to your account every fortnight. It's far more than that.

In fact, some claim the additional benefits delivered via the Pensioner Concession Card (available with the Age Pension) are more useful than the actual cash payment from Centrelink itself.

Of late, several changes have been rolled out affecting the eligibility for the Age Pension, causing a stir among Australians. It isn’t really a surprise considering how essential the Age Pension is for many Aussies.

While it's true that many might find it challenging to handle the reduction in the Age Pension rates, the silver lining appears in the form of the enduring benefits that accompany eligibility for an Age Pension.

Here are a few perks linked with holding a Pensioner Concessions Card:
  • Discounted medical prescriptions under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

  • A heftier refund for medical expenses once you reach the Medicare Safety Net.

No way do we receive 50% off in Council Fates!!!!! Where did that figure come from?

The seniors card also gives people extra benefits. One bakers in our town gives 5% discount on everything we buy, some tourist attractions also give discounts to seniors card holders. Our local IGA gives 10% discount to pensioners every Tuesday and offers free delivery to pensioners and regular customers who are unable to shop personally due to health issues. They have been doing this for many years. They even used to do a phone order for a blind lady who lived 20 miles out of town, usually fortnightly, and deliver it to her and help her put it away. This lady now has in home carers daily who deliver the order. IGA staff still take the order by phone and pack it ready for the carers to collect. Our chemists and a couple of local butchers also offer free delivery in the town area to regular customers, mostly older people who can no longer shop for themselves.

In Vic it says

How much is the concession?

50% deduction on council rates up to a yearly maximum of $253.20 for 2022–23.
So that's saying Land Rates must only be $506.40 for a year

In Sydney my Land rates are around $2000 a year and I receive around $100 off a quarter

That's the true Aussie Spirit

It would seem to me it does not pay to work to save your own money to provide for your old age - drink, travel and gamble - and the government will look after you.

Everyone should check because for example in NSW anyone over 60 and still working over 20 hours a week is eligible for a Seniors Savers card. As you say local businesses give discounts to cardholders. But there is also the Seniors card where you must be over 60 and no longer working or working less than 20 hours a week on average. All states and territories have sim ilar arrangements so it is worth checking.

But these should not be confused with the Commonwealth Health Card which is a federal government card and only those on welfare payments including age pensions would be eligible. That is where an age pension of just $1 a week would become important because it would open up much greater savings than the Senior Cards offered by the states.

Very true!!! It is a pity that too many of us found out too late...
