As the year comes to a close, it’s also time to evaluate some of the most sought-after products in the country–which are both quality and bang for the buck.

Aussie shoppers were asked to name the Products of the Year 2024, and after an extensive process, they finally unveiled the winners of this year’s awards!

The Product of the Year Awards is the country’s largest consumer-based awards program designed to help guide shoppers towards tried and tested buys.

This year, more than 5,000 Aussie shoppers cast their votes for their favourite supermarket products through a NielsenIQ survey.

Out of the 44 product categories, Coles took home 19 awards, while Woolworths was awarded 10.

Some of the big winners from 2023 also include the Koala Kirribilli Bed Base, which won best bedroom furniture, with customers around the country praising its high-quality design.

Home brand buys also proved to be popular, with shoppers reaching for Coles Finest Spanish Truffle Cheese ($7.85) and Belgian Dark Chocolate Block ($2.30) for their charcuterie needs, as well as Woolworths Thick Cut Beef Eye Fillet 320g ($22) and Chicken Kyiv Bites with Creamy Garlic Filling 400g ($8.50).

When it comes to household cleaning and laundry products, Woolworths won its Strike Pro Mould Killer Spray ($2.95), which earned five-star reviews online.

Sarah Connelly, Product of the Year Director, said, 'The rising cost of living has definitely changed the landscape, with affordability and ease being the leading driver behind the way Aussies shop.'

'Whilst treats were commonplace in the shopping trolley before living expenses started to increase, these are now classed as luxury items, with many shoppers viewing snacks as a low priority when it comes to feeding the family,’ Connelly added.

She also said that Australians are more focused on health and sustainability, as seen by the high rankings of Coles Joyful Protein Bar Range ($6), which offers 8.5g protein per serving with different flavours like peanut butter and chocolate fudge, and Macro 12 Large Pasture Raised Carbon Neutral Free Range Eggs 600g.

With the cost of living crisis still rising today, 45 per cent of Australians have switched from branded items to home brands to stretch their budgets.

Key Takeaways

  • Australian shoppers have voted for their top products in the Product of the Year awards, with Coles and Woolworths claiming multiple wins.
  • Coles came out as the leader, gaining 19 awards, while Woolworths took home 10 awards from the 44 product categories.
  • Some of the top-rated products included Coles Spanish truffle cheese and Belgian dark chocolate, Woolworths' Strike Pro Mould Killer Spray and fresh thick-cut beef eye fillet.
  • Product of the Year Director, Sarah Connelly, noted that affordability, ease, health, and sustainability are becoming increasingly important factors for Australian shoppers.
