Finally, the penny drops: these aren't just random markers, but a brilliant Australian invention that's quietly preventing tragedies on our roads.
The story behind these simple yet ingenious signs is one of true-blue Aussie determination, and it starts with a young bloke from Queensland who wouldn't take 'that's just how things are' for an answer.
Meet the truckie who changed everything
Rod Hannifey started work in the transport industry at 15, drove his first road train at 16 and got his semi licence at 17 years of age.
He drove local and interstate for Frigmobile for the next 2 years and then for Brisbane Container Park for the following 12 years. In 1992 Rod started driving B-double fuel tankers—but it was what happened in 1999 that would change Australian road safety forever.
Like so many long-haul drivers, Rod knew the gut-wrenching feeling of fighting fatigue on endless highways, desperately searching for a safe spot to pull over.
In 1999, Rod was driving fuel tankers for Ron Finemore Transport. During one particularly challenging run, struggling to find a safe resting spot before it was too late, an idea struck him: what if there was a simple way to signal to tired drivers that a safe haven was just ahead?

The brilliantly simple solution
Rod's concept couldn't have been more straightforward. Simply, six green reflectors are displayed on three road marker posts in a 3, 2, 1 layout leading up to a stopping place. Official truck bays can be a long way apart and you don't always know how far it is to the next one so having the green indicator bays can make a difference. It takes about half an hour to do a complete mark of a bay, about $30 of reflectors and maybe $50 of labour, so it's not a big expense.
How the green reflector system works
Three green dots = 400-500 metres to rest area
Two green dots = 200-250 metres to rest area
One green dot = you've arrived
Total cost per site: Around $80 in materials and labour
The beauty of the system lies in its simplicity. No fancy technology, no expensive infrastructure—just reflective markers that catch headlights in the dark, giving exhausted drivers precious advance warning of a safe place to stop.

From trial to triumph
In 2005, procedures for a Queensland programme were set up, winning Rod a road safety award. In 2008, NSW Roads and Maritime Service adopted the Queensland model. Victoria joined along the way, and only last year, South Australia joined the party.
The momentum continues to build. The Minns Labor Government is boosting support for truckies travelling on regional roads as part of an $11.9 million investment to improve rest areas. Transport for NSW has marked 14 new green reflector sites.
These aren't just numbers on a government spreadsheet—they represent real potential for saving lives on roads that have become increasingly dangerous.
The sobering reality of our roads
With Australia tragically recording its highest road toll in over 10 years in 2024, operations like this one are critical to improving road safety. Last year, there were 1,300 lives lost on our roads, with 179 of these lives lost in crashes involving a heavy vehicle—a stark reminder of why Rod's simple innovation matters so much.
Yet there's reason for cautious optimism. In the 12 months ending September 2024, Australia recorded a significant 17.6 per cent decrease in fatalities involving heavy trucks compared to the previous year. During that period, total deaths dropped to 154.
Why this matters to all of us
While the green reflector system was designed with truck drivers in mind, these motorists use truck rest areas or general-use rest areas instead, because they know truckies will come and go, they know someone will be there to keep an eye on them. Many caravan and motorhome users also benefit from these marked safe havens.
There just aren't enough rest stops for truck drivers across Australia, so this initiative in NSW is a huge help. It gives drivers a clear signal of where they can safely pull up and take a break.
For those of us who share the roads, the system represents something more significant: evidence that even in our complex modern world, sometimes the best solutions come from practical people who refuse to accept that 'that's just how things are.'

The Northern Territory and Western Australia are yet to take part officially. There are still lots of places to be marked all over the country. But Rod, now in his role as Past National Road Freighters Association President, continues his tireless advocacy.
He received the 2000 National Professional Driver of the Year Award and has twice been nominated since then, and again became a finalist. In 2016 he was awarded a Highly Commended at the 2016 ACRS Road Safety awards for his efforts. For over 20 years Rod has pushed the simple cheap and effective program of marking informal truck rest areas with green reflectors.
What makes Rod's story particularly inspiring is how one person's practical solution has grown into a nationally recognised safety system. Another driver told me it had saved their life. It's such a simple idea, but it's already saving lives.

Transport is also exploring opportunities to establish additional new green reflector sites and industry feedback is guiding this work.
