The ultimate guide to organising your refrigerator

If your fridge is anything like ours, it's probably the focal point of your home.

We’re also sure most of you can relate when we tell you that we often go to our fridge, open the door, and check to see if a new food has just magically appeared in it (maybe something we bought that we forgot about).

We're also a fan of meal prepping so we often check what food supplies we have before planning our meals.

However, it can't be denied that organising the refrigerator is a pretty tedious task.

So, if you're looking for tips on how to effectively organise your fridge, then we've got good news for you!

Mum Steph Pase, who is a contributor to women's media company Mamamia, shared some of her home hacks for keeping your fridge clean and organised.

So, without further ado, here are the tips that she shared:

1. Labels

Labels can help keep everything organised so you can easily find what you need.

Steph wrote: "In my fridge, I use labels in 'Font 19' from Little Label Co. Having labels has helped our home run much more smoothly."

The mum also advised making sure that the surface is clean and dry before applying labels on fridge doors to prevent marks.

2. Condiments

Steph said that the best way to store condiments inside your fridge is by keeping them inside a lazy susan.

"The perfect solution for condiments whether they are in the pantry or the fridge is a lazy susan. This allows easy access to all your condiments without having to move anything around," she quipped.

The mum said that she uses Kmart's $7.50 Clear Storage Turntable. However, you can use any lazy susan to get the job done.

3. Food containers

The mum revealed that she uses OXO Greensavers to store chopped up produce and keeps them on the top shelf. These food containers can be purchased from Catch, Spotlight, or Victoria's Basement.

"On the second shelf, I keep any other veggies that I don’t have GreenSavers for, and put them in glass containers from Kmart," she shared.

Meanwhile, Steph said that she keeps yoghurts and squeeze foods (like herbs) in a long clear tub which she purchased from Kmart.

4. Meat and dairy

Having an allocated space for meats, dairy, and other lunch items can help to cut down on food waste and make meal prep a breeze. By keeping everything organised, you can make sure that you're using up all of your ingredients and not letting anything go to waste. Plus, it'll be easier to grab what you need when you're in a hurry. So why not give it a try?

5. The 'use me first' shelf

If you're looking to cut down on food waste, one simple step you can take is to designate a shelf in your fridge specifically for products that need to be used up first.

This way, you're less likely to forget about an open item and let it go bad (we’re looking at you, a jar of pickles we bought 3 years ago but are too lazy to throw out). And, it can help you stay organised so you can easily see what needs to be used up first.

We would also like to share with you a few extra fridge organisation tips from us here at the SDC:

1. Keep a grocery list on the fridge door.

2. Put frequently used items at eye level.

3. Put leftovers in clear containers.

4. Use a magnetized whiteboard to jot down notes.

5. Organise the fridge by grouping similar food items together.

6. Make sure to regularly clean the fridge in order to prevent the build-up of dirt and bacteria.

and what's new here? It's pretty common sense. I'm a senior and I like my and my mum and grandmas did, organise "like foods" on same shelf/space/basket, label with tape/pen if required, most commonly used at eye level. And to start it was glass used for keeping foods in, as plastics weren't available as readily as they are now. I still use glass where possible. I use a list on the door or postit notes, a friend uses a whiteboard marker- comes off easily, and grandma used a chalkboard to make a list.

These people need to get a life. My fridge looks like a bomb has gone off inside, but I know exactly what's in there and I can always fit more stuff in. I do not have the time or inclination to faff about when I get my shopping home, the plan is to get it all away as fast as possible and move on to more interesting things.:)

Those that have time to label food in fridge must be bored senseless, to much food, to much money. I say this because our foodis not in there long enough and neither my wife our I have dementia, so don't need to label food 🤔🇦🇺👍
