The ultimate guide to keeping a bouquet fresh for a long time

There's no denying that fresh flowers are a beautiful addition to any home. They can add colour and life to a room, make a small area seem larger, or simply brighten up a space.

However, one of our common dilemmas when it comes to receiving (or purchasing) a bouquet is that these beautiful natural ornaments don't always last as long as we'd like them to.

Before we get into how to prolong the life of your flowers, let's consider some of the main reasons why they may not last as long as you'd like:

1. Your flowers are not kept in a cool location

If your flowers are kept in a hot location, such as next to a heating vent or in direct sunlight, they will not last as long. Keep your flowers away from heat sources, and in a location where they will get plenty of airflow and moisture.

2. You have not changed the water in which your flowers are kept

If the water used to maintain your flowers has not been replaced, the flowers will not last as long. The water in which your flowers are kept should be changed every few days, and the stems should be trimmed before placing them back in the water.

3. You have not "fed" your flowers

If you have not fed your flowers, they will not last as long. Flower food, which usually comes with bouquets, is available for purchase at most florists. While flower food is usually easy to make — you just need to mix it with room temperature water before adding in the flowers — it is important to follow the instructions on the package to prepare them.

4. You have not deadheaded your flowers.

If you have not deadheaded your flowers, they will not last as long. Deadheading is the process of removing spent blooms from the plant. This allows the plant to focus its energy on producing new blooms, and can also help to prolong the life of the plant.

Now that we know some of the main reasons why flowers may not last as long as we'd like, let's take a look at how to prolong the life of your flowers.

Here are our top tips for prolonging the life of your flowers:

1. Choose the perfect vase

No matter what kind of flowers you're dealing with, it's important to make sure you're putting them in the right vase.

Larger blooms should be pruned short and arranged in a low vase so that they can support one another while spreading out when they open.

Meanwhile, taller vases should be used for blooms that are more delicate and thin.

Finally, you should always remember not to "overcrowd" a vase; if one bouquet is large enough for the flower holder, create two arrangements out of it and use another vase.

2. Trim Excess Leaves

We mentioned earlier that you should "deadhead" the flowers to keep them fresh. But, to be even more specific, it is also advised to cut off any leaves that stick out below the water line in the vase as they can crowd the vase and prevent the flowers from receiving nutrients and moisture.

3. Nourish with "Flower Food"

We explained the importance of flower food for keeping the freshness of your flowers. But, if your bouquet happens to not include food, some people advise adding sugar to the water or soda water whenever you set up the ensemble or do your water changes.

So, there you have it, folks! The next time you receive flowers, you now know what to do to keep them fresh for longer in your home!

I have always used mums tip, a tsp of sugar each time I change the water. Flowers last up to 2 weeks😃

~Adding a crushed aspirin into your vase water reduces the pH of the water, which adds to the life of cut flowers.

~Especially with roses, trim the bottom of the stalks by about 1" just before placing them into the vase, then every few days.
This keeps the cells in the stems viable and helps with drawing up the water to the flower.

~1/4 teaspoon bleach added to 1 litre of water reduces growth of bacteria, which also extends longevity

A tablespoon of sugar feeds flowers, and one of vinegar prevents bacteria. Also trim all foliage below water line.
